Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting the overall visitor numbers and outlining the changes in visitor satisfaction levels before and after the refurbishment of Ashdown Museum. You successfully highlighted key data points, such as the increase in total visitors from 74,000 to 92,000 and the notable rise in very satisfied visitors from 15 percent to 35 percent. However, some areas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the opening mentions 'both bar graphs', even though the prompt includes a table and pie or survey breakdown charts rather than two standard bar graphs. To reach a higher level, all parts of the visual data should be described with greater precision, ensuring that every graphic element is correctly identified and comprehensively reported without minor inaccuracies in data labelling.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and attempts a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific data comparisons in the body paragraphs. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'Similarly' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical and repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between sentences without smooth transitions. Paragraphing is also an issue; the text is lumped into only two main paragraphs where a clearer division—separating the visitor numbers table from the survey charts—would improve readability and structure. To move up, you need to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and organise your response into distinct, logically structured paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'tremendous', 'noticeably', and 'refurbishment'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the response, such as 'visiters' instead of 'visitors', 'reneuation' instead of 'renovation', and 'tremenduously' used awkwardly as an adverb modifying a verb phrase. Additionally, phrases like 'repairing of building' sound unnatural. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision in word form and collocation. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on accurate spelling, natural word partnerships, and a more varied selection of academic vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms. You demonstrated control over basic past and present tense structures when reporting data changes. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in article usage, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'The both bar graphs are showing', 'for same year', 'people who has visited', and 'satisfied people number are also showing'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing spaces after full stops. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret and prevent the response from achieving a higher level. To improve, you need to work on reducing grammatical errors, especially regarding articles, pluralisation, and complex sentence construction.
