Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the visitor numbers and surveying results for both periods, meeting the criteria for a solid performance. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others. For example, while the overall visitor numbers and satisfaction percentages are mentioned, the explanation of the survey results contains inaccurate figures, such as stating that 'very satisfied' accounted for 40% in the year after refurbishment when the chart shows 35%, and confusing the categories for the year before refurbishment. The overview attempts to capture the main trends, noting higher visitor numbers and increased satisfaction after the refurbishment, but it lacks precision. To reach a higher level, all data points must be accurately transcribed and supported without confusion between the two survey categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical attempt to divide information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing each year. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical. The writer relies heavily on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'The highest proportion was' and 'The year before refurbishment was', which restricts natural progression. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly with phrases like 'In there' and 'most lest result'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks smooth transitions between sentences. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing clearly points back to the correct data without mechanical repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss percentages, visitor numbers, and satisfaction levels. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a limited range, such as 'refurbushment', 'higest', 'whise', 'dissatified', 'respectivily', and 'lest'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'proportion' and 'category', but these are often used inaccurately or repetitively. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher band. To improve lexical resource, the student should focus on accurate spelling, correct word forms, and expanding the variety of descriptive adjectives and adverbs to discuss statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The table and two pie chart compare...' and relative clauses or comparative structures, though control is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, including 'chart compare' instead of 'charts compare', 'most of the visitor are dissatisfied', and 'tourist visted to the museum'. Punctuation is also basic, with missing commas in lists and compound sentences. These errors reflect a limited grammatical control where attempts at complex structures frequently introduce mistakes. To improve, the writer needs to focus on basic agreement, correct verb tenses for describing past data, and reducing errors in simple sentence frames.
