Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given table illustrates the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after it refurbishment, while the below pie charts compare the results of surveys of visitors satisfaction during the two periods.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that after refurbishment Ashdown Museum experienced a substantial increase in its visitors. Furthermore, year before refurbishment, visitors were dissatisfied which was the dominent category and no response was least favorate. By contrast, Year after refurbishment, tourists satisfied category was the leading one and both no response and very dissatisfied category were at its lowest.

To begin with, the results of visitors satisfaction in the year before refurbishment, dissatisfied category was the dominent one accounting for 40% which went through a dramatic reduction, reached 15% in the year after refurbishment. Conversely, satisfied was on the second place at 30% before, which jumped to 40% in year after and over took the other categories.

On the other hand, very satisfied experienced a remarkable surge and its contribution went up from 15% to 35% in year after, and this became the second dominent category. While, very dissatisfied edged down to 5% and no reponse remained unchanged during the two periods. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main data points from both the table and the charts. A clear overview is presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the overall rise in visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. Key features are selected and compared appropriately, such as the increase in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the transition of the dissatisfied category being replaced by satisfied as the leading response. While some of the supporting details tend to over-generalise slightly or could be extended with more precise comparative analysis, the main trends are covered well enough to satisfy the requirements for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific body paragraphs detailing the survey results and visitor numbers. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Conversely' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen with phrases like 'On the other hand' used to introduce further survey results rather than a contrasting point, and some referencing and transitional phrasing could be smoother to achieve a higher level of fluency.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'substantial increase', 'dramatic reduction', and 'remarkable surge'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'refurbishment' spelled incorrectly or missing articles ('it refurbishment'), 'dominent' (dominant), 'favorate' (favourite), 'tourists satisfied category', and 'no reponse'. Word choices are sometimes slightly unnatural or strained, such as 'reached 15%' when describing a percentage drop, though communication is generally maintained and the vocabulary is minimally adequate for addressing the visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors in sentence construction, prepositions, and word forms, such as 'year before refurbishment, visitors were dissatisfied which was the dominent category', 'tourists satisfied category was the leading one', and missing prepositions like 'at its lowest' or incorrect use of plural/singular agreement ('both no response and very dissatisfied category were at its lowest'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist throughout the text, they rarely impede communication, reflecting a typical performance at this level.
