IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table compares the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum, while the pie charts illustrate the proportions of feedback from visitors on their visit to the museum before and after the refurbishment.

Overall, after the refurbishment, the museum significantly received more visitors. Visitors satisfaction increased remarkably, while the negative responses were reduced by a large margin. Meanwhile the percentage of the visitors giving no response remains unchanged.

Following the renovation, the numbers of visitors to museum increased from 74,000 to 92,000. The percentage of positive feedback had a remarkable change from 45% to 75%. The percentage of the visitors that were satisfied increased from 30% to 40%, becoming the largest portion in the chart. Also, the proportion of very satisfied was more than doubled from 15% to 35% .

The negative responses from visitors covered half of the chart containing 10% very dissatisfied visitors and 40% dissatisfied visitors. But after refurbishment, the proportion of dissatisfied visitors fell to 10% and the, very dissatisfied, visitors were halved to 5% . Although, the percentage of no response remained 5% as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key data from both the table and the charts. You clearly reported the main trends, noting the increase in total visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the significant shift in satisfaction levels, such as very satisfied visitors rising from 15% to 35%. The ideas are extended and supported with accurate figures from the visual data. To reach the highest bands, you could push the analysis slightly further by integrating the data points more fluidly, perhaps by contrasting the drop in negative feedback more directly with the surge in positive ratings rather than presenting them in isolated blocks of text.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the table data from the survey results. Paragraphing is used appropriately to guide the reader through the different datasets. However, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the final paragraph feels slightly abrupt ('The negative responses from visitors covered half of the chart...'). To achieve a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and that referencing words maintain a seamless logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'proportion of feedback', 'significantly received more visitors', and 'largest portion in the chart'. Communication is clear throughout, but there are some word choice and punctuation inaccuracies, such as unnecessary commas ('and the, very dissatisfied, visitors were halved') and minor unnatural collocations. To reach a higher lexical band, you should aim for greater precision and naturalness in your phrasing, ensuring that less common vocabulary items are used with accurate collocations and without awkward punctuation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing structures such as 'while the pie charts illustrate...' and 'Although, the percentage of no response remained...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the awkward placement of commas around 'very dissatisfied' and slight issues with prepositions or verb placements (e.g., 'the museum significantly received more visitors' instead of 'received significantly more visitors'). These errors rarely impede communication. To move up to higher bands, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation.
