IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
As we can clearly see that the table in the top is probably showing the total number of both people who have visited the museum before its refurbishment and those who have visited after refurbishment according to surveys. The table illustrates that number of visitors has increased all of sudden after the renovation of museum which is remarkable.
Furthermore, the surveys also demonstrate the comparision of visitors or spectators before and after refurbishment in different percentages. Lets have a look on the first image on the left side, it illustrates that 15 percent people were extremely satisfied, 30 percent were disappointed, 40 percent were extremely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at 105 words. The writing responds to the task only minimally, as the student mentions the table and the first chart but does not complete the description of the visual data or provide a proper overview. Key features such as the visitor numbers (74,000 rising to 92,000) are stated, but the survey data is cut off mid-sentence, leaving the summary incomplete. To achieve a higher band, the response must meet the word count requirement and present a fully developed summary covering all parts of the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation attempted, including transitional phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'Lets have a look on', but the text lacks a clear overall progression because it cuts off prematurely. Paragraphing is not properly managed, and the abrupt end prevents any logical conclusion or smooth development of ideas. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used in a rather mechanical way. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer needs to structure the response into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs with logical transitions that guide the reader through the data from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with basic phrasing such as 'clearly see', 'total number', and 'increased all of sudden'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'table in the top' instead of 'table at the top' or 'top table', and 'Lets have a look on' instead of 'at'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the restricted range of vocabulary and frequent lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise, task-appropriate vocabulary and academic collocations to describe trends and percentages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex constructions. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('table in top', 'after renovation of museum'), incorrect prepositions ('look on' instead of 'look at'), and awkward phrasing ('people who have visited the museum before its refurbishment and those who have visited after refurbishment'). These errors are frequent and can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, articles, and prepositions while attempting accurate complex sentences.
