IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after the refurbishment, and the pie charts show their satisfaction levels during the same two time periods. The results for different types of satisfaction were obtained through a survey.

Overall, the total number of people visiting the museum increased significantly. Moreover, their experience improved, resulting in less dissatisfaction.

The total number of visitors during the year after refurbishment was 92,000, 18,000 more than the year before refurbishment (74,000). The results of surveys of visitor satisfaction the year before renovation showed that only 30% people were satisfied and 15% were very satisfied. However, the year after the renovation, the proportion of satisfied visitors increased by 10% (40%), and there was a noticeable increase among very satisfied visitors, by 20% (35%).

Furthermore, the proportion of people who did not respond was the same in both periods, at 5%. The dissatisfaction level among visitors decreased from 40% to 15%, a margin of 25%. Also, very dissatisfied people got less from 10% to 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction increased, and dissatisfaction fell. The overview clearly identifies the broad changes, and the body supports it with relevant figures, including the unchanged 5% with no response. The comparisons between the two survey periods are generally well selected and easy to follow. To make the account more complete and precise, distinguish the two dissatisfaction categories in the overview or explicitly note that both declined; you do report the figures later. Also, “increased by 10% (40%)” and “by 20% (35%)” would be clearer as increases of 10 and 20 percentage points, since these are changes in proportions rather than relative percentage increases.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, visitor totals and satisfaction comparisons. Information progresses logically, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” “However” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. The figures are grouped sensibly, with the unchanged response rate and falling dissatisfaction presented together. Some connections are slightly mechanical, however, and “Moreover” in the overview adds a second feature rather than developing the first. The final “Also” similarly introduces another data point without much integration. For smoother cohesion, group the satisfaction categories by positive and negative responses and use clearer references such as “the proportion reporting dissatisfaction” rather than repeating broad terms like “people” and “visitors.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “satisfaction levels,” “proportion” and “dissatisfaction,” and the meaning remains clear. There are attempts at more precise reporting language, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “The proportion of satisfied visitors increased by 10% (40%)” confuses a percentage-point change with a percentage increase, while “very dissatisfied people got less from 10% to 5%” is an awkward and unclear expression. “Noticeable increase among very satisfied visitors” is understandable but could be more concise and precise. Aim for consistent chart-reporting collocations such as “the share of respondents who were very satisfied rose” and “the proportion who were very dissatisfied fell.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the comparison “92,000, 18,000 more than the year before” and the clause beginning “resulting in less dissatisfaction.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “only 30% people were satisfied,” a determiner is needed before “people” (“30% of people”). The construction “the proportion … increased by 10% (40%)” is also grammatically awkward because the parenthetical figure does not clearly complete the comparison. In the final sentence, “got less from 10% to 5%” has an incomplete verb pattern; use a form such as “fell from 10% to 5%.” Greater control of these patterns would make the otherwise clear comparisons more accurate.
