IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the data related to the Ashdown Museum's total visitors before and after the renovation. One chart shows visitors' satisfaction before the renovation, and another shows how many visitors were satisfied with the new developments.
Overall, the Ashdown Museum shows that a significant number of people visited the museum before and after the redevelopment. Before the refurbishment, a quarter of people were not satisfied. After the changes, the majority of the population was satisfied with the new features.
The total number of tourists was 74,000 before the refurbishment, and after the changes, it rose to 92,000. Firstly, the percentage of people who did not fill out the form remained the same (5) in both years. After cleaning, a large proportion of people were very satisfied (35), while before the improvement it was just (15). The survey shows significant changes in the dissatisfied category; it decreased from 40 to 15 after the repair. Furthermore, the disappointing section slighlty increased from 30 to 40 after renovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and the main figures you report are accurate: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, very satisfied responses increased from 15% to 35%, and dissatisfied responses fell from 40% to 15%. The overview also identifies the broad improvement in satisfaction. However, some details are unclear or misinterpreted. “A quarter of people were not satisfied” does not clearly match the before-refurbishment figures, where dissatisfied and very dissatisfied responses together total 50%. The final comparison reverses the trend: the 30-to-40 increase is in the satisfied category, not a “disappointing section.” Also, “new developments” is not a precise description of the survey. Report the categories consistently and distinguish satisfied from dissatisfied responses.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with figures. This helps the reader follow the general comparison, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “while” provide some cohesion. However, the progression is not always clear because the final sentence gives the wrong category for the 30-to-40 change, and “Firstly” introduces a detail without a matching sequence of points. The two chart descriptions in the introduction could also be more parallel and precise. Group the information by overall attendance and then by satisfaction trends, using clear references such as “the satisfied category” and “the dissatisfied category” to make comparisons easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “proportion,” and “decreased,” so the main information is generally understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing survey data. “The disappointing section” is not an appropriate label for a response category, while “after cleaning” does not convey refurbishment. “Population” and “tourists” are also less accurate than “visitors” or “respondents” in this context. There is a spelling error in “slighlty.” Aim for consistent, neutral terms for the survey categories and avoid substituting vague descriptions for the chart labels; this will make your comparisons more precise and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Before the improvement it was just (15)” and the clause beginning “while before.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, and the comparison of visitor totals is grammatically clear. Some errors and awkward constructions remain. In “The total number of tourists was 74,000 … and after the changes, it rose,” the pronoun “it” has an unclear reference; repeat “the number of visitors” for clarity. “The Ashdown Museum shows that a significant number of people visited” also gives the museum an unnatural role as the subject. Parentheses around figures are unnecessary in these sentences, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. More controlled sentence construction would improve accuracy.
