Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table illustrates the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

The total number of visitors before refurbishment was about 74000 but this number increase rapidly to 92000 just after refurbishment. There are also a survey of visitor satisfaction in which before the number of very satisfied customers was very low at 15% but after the upgrade it rapidly increases at 35% and there is also a 10% of increase in satisfied customers but the most importand is the dissatisfied customers the number was huge before refurbishment at 40% of total, but after the number casually decreases and now is at just 15% of total. The number of very dis satisfied customers also decreases to half after refurbishment but the only thing remains same is the no responsiing persons at 5% in both before and after refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main subject and report several accurate comparisons: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, very satisfied responses increased from 15% to 35%, and dissatisfied responses fell from 40% to 15%. You also note that no response remained at 5%. However, the response has no clear overview that summarises the broad pattern, and some details are incomplete: for example, satisfied visitors rose from 30% to 40%, while very dissatisfied responses fell from 10% to 5%. The phrase “a 10% of increase” is also unclear about the figures being compared. The response is 127 words, below the required 150; 39 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop the key comparisons more fully and include a concise overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a broadly sensible order, moving from visitor totals to satisfaction results, and words such as “but” and “also” show some attempt to connect ideas. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, so the main overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. The second sentence contains many comparisons joined by “but,” “and,” and “the only thing,” which makes the progression difficult to follow. Some references are also unclear, such as “this number” and “the number” when several categories are being discussed. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and group the satisfaction figures into clear comparisons, using linking phrases selectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “total number,” “satisfaction,” “increases,” and “decreases,” so the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for an academic report. “Customers” is less suitable than “visitors” or “respondents,” while “casually decreases” does not express the intended trend. There are also spelling errors in “importand,” “dis satisfied,” and “responsiing,” which make the writing less polished. Aim for precise chart language and accurate spelling, and avoid repeating “number” when a category name or percentage would be clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine several ideas in longer sentences, and the basic meaning can usually be understood. However, the response relies heavily on a single extended sentence, and errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and punctuation sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “this number increase rapidly” needs a past-tense verb, and “There are also a survey” has an agreement error. The opening sentence is copied from the task wording, while the rest shows little variety in sentence structures. Break the information into shorter, controlled sentences and check past-tense forms, singular/plural agreement, and sentence boundaries.
