Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both the visitor total and the satisfaction surveys, and your overview identifies the main changes: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while dissatisfaction gave way to satisfaction. Most figures you report are accurate, including the 40% dissatisfied and 30% satisfied before refurbishment, and the 40% satisfied and 35% very satisfied afterwards. However, one important comparison is unclear: before refurbishment, 15% were very satisfied, not 5%; the 5% figure refers to no response. The phrase “double them didn't even responded” also misstates the comparison, since 10% were very dissatisfied and 5% gave no response. Include the missing after-refurbishment figures for dissatisfaction and very dissatisfaction more clearly to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing the periods. The sequence from the earlier year to the later year is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “In addition” help signal the stages of the report. However, some connections are mechanical or confusing. Repeated use of “however” joins contrasting information without always making the relationship clear, and the sentence beginning “Also, the largest proportion…” contains several figures in a crowded sequence. The reference in “double them” is also unclear. Grouping the satisfaction categories more deliberately—for example, comparing positive and negative responses across both years—would create smoother progression and clearer comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “largest proportion,” “dissatisfied,” and “satisfied,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “transformation” and “impressed.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: visitors are not “impressed” in the chart, which records whether they were “very satisfied,” and “reaction of the visitor shifted” is an awkward way to describe survey results. Spelling errors in “dissapointed” and “tranformation,” along with imprecise phrases such as “visitor number,” limit the accuracy and range of the vocabulary. Use the chart’s satisfaction terms consistently and practise natural collocations for reporting proportions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “however” and an overview sentence beginning “In addition.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “The diagrams below demonstrates” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the total number of visitor” needs a plural noun. In “during the year before refurbishment of the Ashdown Museum the visitor number was 74,000 however, after it increased,” punctuation and clause structure are faulty; separate the contrast into two clauses or sentences. There are also errors in “double them didn't even responded,” including pronoun reference and verb form. Check agreement, articles, plurals, and punctuation when editing, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
