IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The table compares the total number of visitors to the Ashdown Museum, while the pie charts illustrate the proportions of feedbacks from visitors during their visit before and after renovation.
Overall, after the renovation, the museum received significantly more visitors. The positive responses from visitors increased by a large margin, and in addition the proportion of negative responses fell substantially. However, the total number of visitors who gave no response was unchanged.
After renovating the museum, the total number of visitors to Ashdown elevated from 74,000 to 92,000. The positive feedback changed remarkably from 45% to 75%. The percentage of satisfied visitors climbed from 30% to 40%, becoming the largest proportion, and the proportion of very satisfied visitors more than doubled from 15% to 35%.
Although negative feedback covered half of the pie chart before the refurbishment but it fell significantly to 15% after the renovation. In the proportions, very dissatisfied visitors halved to 5% and the proportion of dissatisfied visitors, the largest proportion before, fell from 40% to 10%. Meanwhile, the percentage of no response remained 5% as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main features and gives a clear overview: visitor numbers rose, positive ratings increased, negative ratings declined, and non-responses stayed constant. Most figures are reported accurately, including the rise from 74,000 to 92,000 and the positive total from 45% to 75%. However, one important figure is incorrect: dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%, not 10%. Also, “negative feedback covered half” is a reasonable summary of the pre-refurbishment figures (50%), but the later total is 20% when the two negative categories are combined. The account is otherwise well supported and compares the periods effectively. Check combined categories against their component figures to maintain precision throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with a logical progression from overall changes to specific survey results. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Although” and “Meanwhile” help guide the reader, and the comparisons are generally easy to follow. Some cohesion is less controlled: “Although negative feedback covered half … but it fell” uses two contrasting markers for the same relationship, making the sentence awkward. “In the proportions” is also an unclear transition into the figures. The overview repeats points that are then developed in the detail paragraphs, but this does not seriously disrupt progression. Use simpler, more precise links and ensure each sentence connects its comparison clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range for describing the data, including “proportions,” “increased by a large margin,” “fell substantially” and “more than doubled.” These choices communicate the main trends, though some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely. “Feedbacks” is not the usual uncountable form in this context, while “elevated” is an awkward choice for visitor numbers; “rose” or “increased” would be more idiomatic. “Changed remarkably” is vague, and “negative feedback covered half of the pie chart” is less precise than describing the share of respondents. Greater control of collocation and more exact trend vocabulary would make the report sound more fluent and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence and comparisons with “from … to …”. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions prevent consistently accurate control. In “Although negative feedback covered half … but it fell,” the concessive clause is incorrectly paired with “but”; use either “Although …, it fell” or “Negative feedback covered …, but it fell.” The phrase “the proportion of dissatisfied visitors, the largest proportion before, fell” also has an awkward inserted clause that interrupts the sentence structure. There is some effective control of tense and comparison, but proofreading clause links and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
