IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table chart illustrates the total number of people who visited Ashdown museum year before and after refurbishment and the pie charts compare the outcome of a survey about satisfaction level of visitors over the same period.

Overall, after the year of refurbishment, the quantity of visitors increased considerably. It is also noticeable that the satisfaction level rose significantly after refurbishment, while dissatisfaction level experienced an decline.

In term of total visitors, the year before refurbishment around 74000 people visited Ashdown Museum. The year after refurbishment, the figure showed a massive resurgence, reaching approximately 92000.

According to the pie charts, year before refurbishment 15% people were very satisfied with the museum, which more than doubled after refurbishment, reaching 35%. Satisfied visitors also increased from 30% to 40 during the same period. By contrast, the people who were dissatisfied and very dissatisfied stood at 40% and 10%, respectively, before refurbishment, that became less than half after refurbishing, 15% and 5%, respectively. There was no response from 5% visitors in both the given year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, positive ratings increased, and dissatisfaction fell. It also reports the satisfaction categories with figures that match the charts, including the unchanged 5% with no response. The overview clearly identifies the broad contrast between the two periods, and the body supports it with relevant comparisons. This is a strong, well-focused summary. To make the account more fully developed, state the overall shift in satisfaction more explicitly—for example, that satisfied or very satisfied visitors formed a majority after refurbishment, whereas dissatisfied or very dissatisfied visitors were the majority before it. Also use the exact figures confidently rather than qualifying them as “around” or “approximately,” since the table gives precise totals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, visitor totals, and then survey results. This makes the main comparisons easy to follow, and contrast markers such as “Overall,” “According to,” and “By contrast” help signal relationships between the data. The final paragraph also groups the satisfaction categories sensibly. Some linking and reference choices are less smooth, however: “which more than doubled” has an unclear reference, and the long final comparison combines several figures and time periods in one sentence. Use clearer references such as “the proportion of very satisfied visitors” and divide the final comparison into shorter, parallel sentences to make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary to describe the charts, including “increased considerably,” “stood at,” and “respectively,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. The writer also attempts more formal or varied expressions, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context. “The table chart” is redundant, “outcome of a survey” is less precise than “survey results,” and “massive resurgence” is an unsuitable collocation for a rise in visitor numbers. “Quantity of visitors” is also less natural than “number of visitors.” Aim for precise, conventional data-reporting language rather than dramatic wording; this will make the description sound more fluent and appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a clear overview and comparisons with “while” and “By contrast.” Most of the data can be understood without difficulty, but some grammatical errors remain. In “year before refurbishment,” an article is needed (“the year before refurbishment”); “In term of” should be “In terms of”; and “15% people” needs a determiner or a different construction, such as “15% of visitors.” The phrase “which more than doubled” also lacks a clear grammatical reference, while “an decline” has incorrect article agreement. Check articles, prepositions, and the structure of clauses referring back to figures, and use parallel sentence patterns when comparing percentages.
