IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table and pie chart provides a data about Ashdown Museum and their satisfaction levels in the year before and the year after the museum was refurbished.

Overall, the numbers of visitors increased significantly after refurbishment and the visitor satisfaction improved significantly.

According to the table, 74000 people visited the museum in the year before refurbishment, while the number rose to 92000 in the following year an increase of 18000.

Regarding satisfaction, before refurbishment, only 15% of visitors were very satisfied and 30% were satisfied. In contrast, a large portion were unhappy, with 40% dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied. 5% gave no response.

After refurbishment, the situation changed completely. The percentage of very satisfied visitors more than doubled to 35% and satisfied visitors increased to 40%. This mean that 75% of visitors had a positive experience after the changes. Meanwhile, the proportion of dissatisfied visitors fell sharply from 40% to 15% and very dissatisfied visitors halved from 10% to 5%. The no response rate remained at 5%.

In conclusion, the refurbishment attracted more visitors and led to much higher level of satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features accurately and gives a clear overview: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, while satisfaction improved. The figures are reported correctly, including the increase from 74,000 to 92,000 and the shifts in each satisfaction category. The comparison that 75% had a positive experience after the work is a useful synthesis of the two positive categories. This meets the task well, with relevant details supporting the overview. To make the account more fully developed, compare the overall positive and negative shares across both periods explicitly—for example, positive ratings rose from 45% to 75%, while negative ratings fell from 50% to 20%. Also, “changed completely” slightly overstates the change, since some visitors remained dissatisfied and the no-response figure was unchanged.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised in a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, details for the period before refurbishment, details for the period after it, and a concluding summary. Linking phrases such as “In contrast,” “Meanwhile,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the comparisons, and the before-and-after structure is appropriate for the data. The progression is logical throughout. Some cohesion is a little repetitive, however: the opening overview and final sentence both repeat that visitor numbers and satisfaction increased. The transition “After refurbishment, the situation changed completely” is also broad rather than a precise signpost. A more concise ending and transitions that directly identify the comparison would make the organisation feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The response uses a sufficient range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “increased significantly,” “a large portion,” “fell sharply,” and “proportion.” These choices help describe changes and comparisons clearly, and the meaning remains easy to understand. There are occasional imprecise or awkward expressions: “the table and pie chart” does not accurately identify the visuals, which include charts showing survey results, and “a data” is not a natural phrase. “The situation changed completely” is also stronger and less precise than the figures warrant. Greater consistency in using terms such as “percentage,” “share,” and “proportion,” alongside more exact descriptions of the visuals, would improve flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

There is a useful mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate, including “In contrast, a large portion were unhappy” and “The no response rate remained at 5%.” Comparisons are generally expressed clearly, and punctuation is mostly controlled. A few errors remain. In the opening, “The table and pie chart provides” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “a data” also has an article and noun-form problem. In “This mean that 75%,” the verb should be “means,” and “led to much higher level of satisfaction” needs an article before “much higher level.” Checking agreement and articles during revision would help make the otherwise clear sentence structures more consistently accurate.
