IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of survey held in Ashdown museum about the satisfaction level of viewers, while the table chart depicts the information about the total number of visitors who visited the museum throughout the year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5

The response identifies the two visual elements and their general subjects: visitor satisfaction and total visitor numbers. However, it does not summarise the data or report any figures, comparisons, or overall trends. In particular, it misses the rise in visitors from 74,000 to 92,000 and the shift from mostly dissatisfied responses before refurbishment to mostly satisfied responses afterwards. The description of the visuals is also imprecise: the satisfaction results are shown in pie charts, not a single pie chart, and the visitor totals are presented in a table. The response is only 38 words, well below the required 150, so the task is addressed only minimally. Add an overview and select key figures to compare.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The sentence has a basic logical structure: it first introduces the satisfaction information and then the visitor total, using “while” to connect the two. This gives the reader a simple indication of how the visuals relate to the task. However, there is no overview, development, or paragraphing, and the response ends before presenting any actual findings. As a result, there is no progression from introducing the visuals to summarising and comparing their data. To improve, organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main changes, and one or two paragraphs comparing selected figures. Use clear links such as “before refurbishment,” “afterwards,” and “by contrast” to guide the reader through those comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction level,” and “total number of visitors,” so its general subject is understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this report: “survey held” does not clearly describe survey results, “viewers” is not the appropriate term for museum visitors, and “table chart” is not a natural label for the table. The repeated use of “information” also limits precision. Use accurate terms such as “survey results,” “visitors,” and “table,” and include vocabulary for reporting change and comparison, for example “increased,” “accounted for,” and “whereas.” This would make the description more precise and suitable for an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response contains one complete sentence with a clear main structure: “The pie chart illustrates …, while the table chart depicts …”. The clauses are connected appropriately, and the meaning is broadly understandable. However, the grammatical range is very limited because there is no further sentence structure to demonstrate control, and the sentence includes awkward constructions such as “proportion of survey held” and “the total number of visitors who visited.” The latter also repeats the same idea in the noun and relative clause. Aim for concise, accurate patterns such as “The charts show the survey results, while the table gives visitor totals.” Then use additional sentences to report the main changes, checking articles and phrasing as you write.
