Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides data on the number of visitors during the previous year and the next year after the renovation of Ashdown Museum. While, pie chart illustrates the proportion of results of surveys of visitor satisfaction in a prior year and the later year after refurbishment.

Overall, after the restoration of museum figure of visitors increased significantly. Before remodeling, proportion of dissatisfied visitors was the highest while after renovation the percentage of satisfied visitors increased significantly. Moreover, no response shared the least contribution in both cases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the main features and make accurate comparisons: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%, and the satisfied categories increased. Your overview also identifies the shift from dissatisfaction being the largest group before refurbishment to satisfaction being more prominent afterwards, while noting that non-response stayed lowest or unchanged. This gives the reader a clear account of the overall changes. To strengthen the report further, state the survey figures consistently as percentages and make the overview more precise: after refurbishment, “satisfied” was the largest single category at 40%, while “very satisfied” reached 35%. The comment that visitor numbers were “not that much significant” is unclear and does not add a useful comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing visitor totals and survey results. The main comparisons are generally presented in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “however,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. However, some transitions are mechanical or awkward, particularly “On the other hand” and “Ultimately,” which do not clearly express the relationships between the figures. Several sentences are also run together without spaces after full stops, making the progression harder to follow. Group the survey changes more deliberately—for example, rising satisfaction together and falling dissatisfaction together—and use clear sentence boundaries and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a varied range of vocabulary, including “increased significantly,” “dominant sector,” “rose,” and “remained the same,” and the intended meaning is usually understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing charts. “Pie chart illustrates the proportion of results” is imprecise, while “enormous 35 percent” and “not that much significant” are unsuitable or unclear in this formal report. The repeated use of alternatives such as “renovation,” “remodeling,” “retrofitting,” and “reconditioning” also makes the description less precise; “refurbishment” would be clearer and consistent. Focus on accurate chart language and natural collocations rather than using many synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “however” and a clause beginning “while,” and most comparisons can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with articles, sentence boundaries, and clause construction. For example, “after the restoration of museum” needs an article, and “While, pie chart illustrates” is not a complete, correctly punctuated sentence. In “Before the retrofitting of museum number of visitors,” the noun phrase also lacks necessary articles and punctuation. Several full stops are followed immediately by the next sentence, and commas are misplaced after “While.” Review article use and ensure each sentence has a clear subject and verb, with punctuation separating complete clauses.
