IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table demontrates the number of people visiting the Ashdown Museum before and after its refurbishment, and the charts illustrate the satisfaction of the visitors, during the same two periods.Overall, the number of visitors increased after the refurbishment of the museum.Meanwhile, the satisfaction of visitors also increased after refurbishment.

During the year before refurbishment the number of visitors was 74,000 which increased to 92,000 during the year after refurbishment. Moreover, 40 people were dissatisfied before refurbishment but the number decreased to 15 during the year after refurbishment.

There were merely 15 visitors who were very satisfied during the year before refurbishment whereas, the number jumped to 35 after refurbishment. In addition, the number of visitors who are satisfied has also been increased by 10 %. As a resut, more people have been visiting the Ashdown musuem during the year after its refurbishment and they are more satisfied compared to the visitors during the year before refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall changes accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved after the refurbishment. You also support this with relevant figures for dissatisfaction and very satisfied visitors. However, the account is selective and some important survey information is not reported: for example, the satisfied share rose from 30% to 40%, while very dissatisfied responses fell from 10% to 5%, and no response remained at 5%. The statement that satisfaction increased is broadly supported, but could be made more precise by distinguishing the categories and describing the overall shift from negative to positive responses. This would make the key features more fully covered and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and details comparing the two periods. The progression from visitor totals to satisfaction figures is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” help connect points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective progression. However, the overview and final sentence repeat the same general claim that visitor numbers and satisfaction increased, while the body could group the satisfaction categories more systematically. The transition “As a result” also suggests a causal relationship that the data alone does not establish. Organising the survey results into positive and negative responses, and avoiding repeated conclusions, would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “very satisfied,” and “increased,” so the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how changes are described, such as “decreased” and “jumped.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “number,” “visitors,” and “increased,” and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “40 people were dissatisfied” should refer to 40% of respondents, and “increased by 10%” is less precise than saying the share rose by 10 percentage points. Spelling errors in “demontrates,” “resut,” and “musuem” also reduce accuracy. More precise chart language and careful proofreading would strengthen this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “visitors who are satisfied” and a comparison with “whereas.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the figures are presented in understandable structures. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “the number of visitors who are satisfied has also been increased,” the passive form is inappropriate; use “the proportion of satisfied visitors also increased.” The phrase “during the year before refurbishment the number…” would benefit from a comma after the introductory phrase, and “whereas, the number” has an unnecessary comma. Tense and agreement are not consistently controlled, as shown by “who are satisfied” amid past-period reporting. More accurate verb forms and punctuation would improve control.
