IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the supplied conbined graph illustrates the proportion on the results of surveys and the numbers of public, who visit it before and after its refurbishing. looking at the overall picture, it is evident that the nubers of tourists increased by this refurbishment, and the survey shows that their dissatification was also replaced by it.
to begin with, the numbers of visiters were recorded about 74000 before this upgrading, while it was increased after this and was recorded around 92000. before the rubishment, majority of people were highest with dissatified, which was recorded at 40. although 30 parcent was satisfied, 15 parcent of them were very satisfied, but 5 parcent of them did not show any response. similarly, 10 parcent were very dussatisfied.
after the rubishment, the majority of dissatisfied was converted into satisfication, and it was recorded at 40. however, very satisfied was also inclined from 15 to 35. eventhough the priority of dissatisfication was decreased from 40 to 15, very dissatisfication was also decline gradually from 10 to 5. nevertheless, the parcentage of no response was remained constant at 5.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and your overview identifies the two main changes: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while responses shifted towards satisfaction. The figures you report for the survey categories are accurate, including the unchanged 5% with no response. You also make useful before-and-after comparisons, such as very satisfied visitors rising from 15% to 35% and very dissatisfied visitors falling from 10% to 5%. This gives the response clear coverage and relevant support. To strengthen the account further, state explicitly that dissatisfaction fell overall, and distinguish the two positive categories from the two negative ones in the overview. Some descriptions, such as “majority,” are imprecise when the figure is 40%, rather than more than half.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by one paragraph for each period, which helps readers compare the data. Sequencing phrases such as “to begin with,” “after,” and “nevertheless” also signal movement between points. However, cohesion is not always smooth or precise. In “the majority of dissatisfied was converted into satisfication,” the reference is unclear, and “however” does not express the relationship between the figures that follow. The second body paragraph also moves through several categories in a list-like way. Grouping the positive responses together and then the negative responses would create clearer progression. Use linking words only when their logical relationship is accurate, and make references to survey categories explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” and “constant,” so the reader can generally identify the subject and categories. However, lexical control is limited by frequent spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural word choices, including “conbined,” “nubers,” “visiters,” “rubishment,” and “dussatisfied.” Some collocations are also awkward: “numbers of public” and “their dissatisfaction was also replaced by it” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Repetition of “recorded” and “dissatisfied” further limits flexibility. Check spelling carefully and use standard chart language such as “the number of visitors,” “accounted for,” and “the proportion who were dissatisfied.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “although” and a comparison using “from 40 to 15.” However, errors in sentence construction and verb forms are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the numbers of visiters were recorded about 74000” lacks a natural grammatical pattern, while “it was increased after this” uses an incorrect passive form. In “the percentage of no response was remained constant,” the passive construction is also faulty. Articles, agreement, and clause structure need more consistent control. Practise writing direct comparisons with accurate forms, such as “The number rose from 74,000 to 92,000” and “The proportion remained at 5%.”
