IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table demonstrates the statistical data of people visiting Ashdown Museum in the preceeding and succeding year of its renovation. The pie charts depict the experience of visitors during two different years.
Overall, the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum increased after the renovation. More people were turning satisfied after the renovation, while the ratio of dissatisfaction also decreased. The ratio of no response was same in both years.
In the previous year, a large proportion i.e. 40 percent was dissatisied after visiting the museum. Wheras, one-tenth of the people were very dissatisfied. Only fifteen percent of the visitors were very satisfied, while the ratio of satisfied vistors was under one-third.
In the succeding year, the response of the vistors was more positive. Over one-third of the population was very satisfied, wheras 40 percent of the tourists were marked as satisfied. A tiny proportion of 15 pecent was dissatified after the visit. The number of visitors turning very dissatisfied was reduced to half in the later year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main features and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, satisfaction improved, and the no-response share stayed unchanged. The figures you include are accurate, including the 40% dissatisfied before refurbishment, 35% very satisfied afterwards, and the fall in very dissatisfied responses from 10% to 5%. This addresses the task well. To make the report more complete and precise, state the visitor totals explicitly (74,000 and 92,000) and compare the combined satisfied and dissatisfied groups, rather than relying mainly on separate categories. The final paragraph also says the response was “more positive” without drawing out the substantial shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction. These omissions keep some key comparisons less fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two survey periods. This makes the information easy to follow, and the contrast between “In the previous year” and “In the succeeding year” provides a useful progression. The overview also brings the main trends together effectively. However, some links are mechanical or awkward, particularly “Whereas” at the start of a sentence, which leaves the contrast with the preceding sentence less smoothly connected. The report would flow more naturally if the figures were grouped by change across the two years, with comparisons linked directly—for example, dissatisfaction falling from 40% to 15%. Clearer connections between the visitor totals and survey results would also strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “proportion,” “dissatisfaction,” and “reduced to half.” These choices communicate the main trends, but several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal data report. “The statistical data of people visiting” is wordy, while “the experience of visitors” does not clearly describe survey satisfaction. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “preceeding,” “dissatisied,” “vistors,” and “pecent,” which reduce accuracy. Prefer standard chart-reporting terms and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for the categories and changes would make the account clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “while the ratio of dissatisfaction also decreased” and “The number of visitors turning very dissatisfied was reduced to half.” Most meanings remain clear, and the response is organised into complete sentences. Some grammatical choices are less accurate or natural, however. In “The ratio of no response was same,” the article is missing before “same”; “a large proportion … was dissatisfied” is awkwardly constructed; and “Whereas” is used as a sentence opener without a complete contrasting clause. The phrase “people were turning satisfied” also uses an unsuitable verb pattern. Aim for more controlled comparisons and check articles and clause structure, while retaining the range of sentence forms you already attempt.
