IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table presents the numbers of people visiting Ashdown Museum during the year before and after it was refurbished, while the pie charts compares visitors' satisfaction during these two periods.

Overall, the yearly number of visitors was significantly higher after renovation. Futhermore, visitors' satisfaction improved significantly. The majority of visors were dissatisfied the year before redevelopment, and it changed completely, making satisfied visitors the largest proportion, decreasing largely the proportion of visitors who were dissatisfied the year after refurbishment.

The year before refurbishment only 74000 people visited Ashdown Museum, compared to 92000 visitors the year after renovation.

40% of visitors were dissatisfied with their visit before refurbishement and this figure decreased significantly to 15% the year after. Similarly, very dissatisfied visitors accounted for 10% the year before refurbishment and the number decreased to 5% the year after. Only 5% visitors did not responded for the surveys.

Although only 15% visitors mentioned that they were very satisfied before the renovation, this percentage increased to 35% after. Furthermore, satisfied visitors accounted for 30% the year before museum was refurbished and 40% the year after.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, dissatisfaction fell, and both satisfaction categories increased. The overview identifies the broad shift from dissatisfaction before refurbishment to satisfaction afterwards, and the body supports this with relevant percentages, including the fall in dissatisfied visitors from 40% to 15% and the rise in very satisfied visitors from 15% to 35%. This is a strong, well-supported response to the task. One detail could be made more precise: the overview says the change happened “completely,” although 20% remained dissatisfied or very dissatisfied after refurbishment. You also mention the 5% who gave no response only for the first period, rather than comparing both periods, when the figure remained unchanged.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for visitor totals and satisfaction figures. The information generally progresses logically, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “Furthermore” help connect points. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the overview, “and it changed completely” has an uncertain reference, while “decreasing largely the proportion” makes the relationship between the two trends awkward to follow. The final two paragraphs could also compare the satisfaction categories more systematically, for example by grouping the positive responses together and then the negative responses. Clearer referencing and more deliberate links between comparisons would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbished,” “accounted for,” “proportion,” and “dissatisfied,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are also attempts to vary wording, such as “renovation” and “redevelopment.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “visors” appears to be a misspelling of “visitors,” “mentioned that they were very satisfied” is less suitable than language about survey responses, and “decreasing largely the proportion” is an awkward collocation. Spelling slips such as “Futhermore” and “refurbishement” also reduce control. Aim for precise, natural reporting phrases and check spelling carefully; this would strengthen the range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a comparison with “compared to.” Most sentences communicate the intended figures clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In the opening, “the pie charts compares” has a subject–verb agreement error; it should be “the pie charts compare.” The phrase “Only 5% visitors” needs an article or “of,” and “did not responded” should be “did not respond.” There are also awkward sentence constructions in the overview, particularly “and it changed completely, making satisfied visitors the largest proportion.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but more consistent agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
