IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates the number of visitors before and after the Ashdown Museum was renovated, while the two pie charts compare the survey results of museum visitors experience, before and after the refurbishment.

Overall, the total number of visitors to the Asdown Museum increased significantly. The refurbishment resulted in more positive review by the visitors. However, the no response percentage remained the same even after the renovation.

The total attendance of Ashdown Museum increased from 74,000 to 92,000 after renovating. Before the refurbishment, 30 percent of the result accounted for dissastified and 10 percent for very dissatisfied, which reduced to 15 and 5 respectively after the refurbishment. Whereas the satisfaction increased from 30 to 40 and very satisfied experience increased from 15 to 35. Notably, the proportion of no response remained at 5 before and after the rennovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall changes accurately: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved while the no-response figure stayed at 5%. You also report the key survey percentages, although the sentence beginning “Before the refurbishment, 30 percent…” incorrectly labels 30% as dissatisfied; the chart shows 40% dissatisfied and 30% satisfied. The response covers the main features, but some comparisons are compressed and the overview could more clearly highlight the reversal from dissatisfaction being the largest group before refurbishment to satisfaction being largest afterwards. The response is 138 words, below the required 150, so it needs a little more detail to meet the task fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph presenting the figures. Its progression from visitor totals to survey results is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Notably” help signal relationships. Some connections are less smooth, particularly “Whereas the satisfaction increased…,” which is a sentence fragment rather than a complete contrast. The survey comparisons are also packed into one paragraph, making the shift between dissatisfied and satisfied categories slightly abrupt. Use complete sentences and group the positive and negative responses more deliberately; this would make the progression more consistently controlled while retaining the clear organisation already present.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased significantly,” “proportion,” “accounted for,” and “remained the same.” This gives you an adequate range for the task, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “more positive review” would be better as “more positive reviews” or “greater visitor satisfaction,” while “survey results of museum visitors experience” is unclear. There are also spelling errors in “Asdown,” “dissastified,” and “rennovation.” Take care to use precise category labels such as “dissatisfied visitors” and “very dissatisfied visitors,” and proofread spelling and word forms. More accurate phrasing would make the comparisons clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the introductory clause “while the two pie charts compare…” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “after renovating” lacks a clear subject for the action; write “after the museum was renovated.” “Whereas the satisfaction increased…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “30 percent of the result accounted for…” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the percentage and the survey category. The phrase “visitors experience” also needs a possessive form or restructuring. Aim to make each comparison a complete sentence and check articles, possessives, and clause structure; this would improve accuracy while building on your existing sentence variety.
