IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table provides data on visitors count to Ashdown Museum prior and after the renovation. While the pie charts illustrate the outcome of surveys of satisfaction of visitors during these years.
Overall, it can be seen that the number of visitors increased after the refurbishment and the proportion of individuals satisfaction also inclined in the relevant year. However, the people who showed no interest remained the same in both years.
In the year before improvement, the amount of visitors to Museum was 74,000. While the number of visitors inclined to 92,000 in the subsequent year.
It can be be seen that the proportion of people who were satisfied with the Museum in the previous year were 30%, closely followed by very satisfied people at 15%, the percentage inclined to 40% and 35% respectively in the year later. The major proportion of chart in the prior year was covered by dissatisfied people at 40%, the number dropped to more than half in the next year to 15%. Although the ratio of people who did not respond remained stagnant at 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main elements of the visuals and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, satisfaction improved, and non-response stayed unchanged. The figures you report for visitors and the satisfaction categories are accurate, including the fall in dissatisfaction from 40% to 15%. This gives the response a sound factual basis. However, the overview is not fully precise: “the proportion of individuals satisfaction also inclined” is unclear, and “people who showed no interest” misrepresents those who gave no response. The comparison would be stronger if you explicitly grouped the two positive categories and the two negative categories, showing the broad shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction. Some details are reported, but the key pattern is not developed as clearly as it could be.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering visitor totals and survey results. The sequence from the overall changes to specific figures is generally logical, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Although” help connect ideas. At times, though, cohesion is mechanical or unclear. The opening uses “While” to begin a sentence that is not complete, and “In the year before improvement” shifts terminology from the task without a clear reason. The survey paragraph also moves between categories without a strong organising principle. Grouping positive responses together, then negative responses and non-response, would make the progression easier to follow and clarify how the figures relate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “proportion,” “dissatisfied,” and “remained stagnant,” and the meaning is usually recoverable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing the visuals. “Visitors count” is an awkward collocation, “individuals satisfaction” is not a natural phrase, and “people who showed no interest” changes the meaning of “no response.” “The percentage inclined” also uses a verb that does not fit a numerical increase. These noticeable word-choice and collocation problems limit precision, even though the response contains enough relevant vocabulary to describe the main data. Aim for standard chart language and use the same clear labels as the visual.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There are attempts at complex sentence forms, such as “Although the ratio of people who did not respond remained stagnant at 5%,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range is limited and several sentence-level errors affect accuracy. “While the pie charts illustrate…” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence, and “It can be be seen” contains an unnecessary repeated verb. In “the proportion of people who were satisfied … were 30%,” the subject and verb do not agree; “the percentage inclined to 40% and 35%” also lacks a clear grammatical construction. Work on complete sentences, agreement, and concise comparison structures, while retaining some complex forms.
