IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

I see in the title number of visitors to ashdown museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished, and I see another 2 charts show the results of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit from this information in the two charts what is the difference between relevant?

In the first table there is a defirense between the total of numbers of visitors ashdown museum before and after refurbishment and I notice that after refurbishment the numbers of visitors grow from 74000 to 92000 visitor just in one year, and for plus of information we have the charts down here we see in it the results of survey of visitors satisfactory before and after refurbishment we notice that before the percentage of visitors very satisfied is just 15 % and the people just satisfied is like 30 % wherever the dissatisfied visitors is the grant percentage it is 40% and 10 % very dissatisfied and no response just 5 % , wherever after refurbishment the percentage of visitors they are very satisfied is more than the double it is 35% and the satisfied from them satisfied more than 40 % here we say that the refurbishment make a difference

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main positive change in visitor numbers, reporting a rise from 74,000 to 92,000, and you compare satisfaction before and after refurbishment. Several survey figures are accurate, including 15% very satisfied and 40% dissatisfied before, and 35% very satisfied after. However, the response does not give a clear, concise overview of the main patterns, and the after-refurbishment figures are incomplete: it says satisfaction was “more than 40%” rather than the actual 40%, and omits the 15% dissatisfied, 5% very dissatisfied and 5% no-response figures. The opening is also unclear and does not help summarise the data. Select the key contrasts and state them directly, including the overall shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some organisation: the response moves from visitor totals to survey results, and “before” and “after refurbishment” help signal comparisons. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the opening sentence is difficult to follow, ending with the unclear question “what is the difference between relevant?” The main body then becomes one long sentence joined by repeated “and,” “wherever” and “we notice,” so relationships between figures are hard to track. Use a brief introduction, a separate overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the key comparisons. Choose linking expressions that show contrast or change accurately, such as “whereas,” “by contrast” and “following refurbishment,” and avoid repeating the same reporting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “total number of visitors,” “percentage,” “refurbishment” and “very satisfied.” This gives the response a basic range suited to the topic. However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning difficult to interpret: “defirense,” “satisfactory” for satisfaction, “the grant percentage,” and “for plus of information” are not appropriate expressions here. “The numbers of visitors grow” is also an awkward collocation for a completed period. Build a reliable set of chart-description phrases, such as “the figure rose,” “the largest proportion,” and “respondents were dissatisfied.” Check spelling and use the exact category labels from the chart.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect several ideas in longer sentences, but control is weak, and many sentences contain errors that make the data harder to understand. For example, “after refurbishment the numbers of visitors grow” has an inconsistent tense, while “the satisfied from them satisfied more than 40%” has an unclear sentence structure. There are also problems with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “the results of survey of visitors” and the extended sentence beginning “In the first table.” Use past tense consistently for the completed periods, and form shorter sentences with a clear subject and verb. For example: “Visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000. The proportion who were satisfied increased from 30% to 40%.”
