Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides the data on the total number of tourists visiting the Ashdown Museum before and after refurbishment. While, pie charts illustrate the results of visitor satisfaction in the same two periods.

Overall, it is noticeable that the total number of visitors after the refurbishment to Ashdown Museum constituted the largest figure, Whereas, results of survery before the refurbishment showed that the majority were dissatisfied, and after the refurbishment, most of them were satisfied.

On closer observation, it is evident that the total number of tourists after the refurbishment accounted highest amount at 92,000, while before the refurbishment to Ashdown Museum represented the lowest figure at around 74,000.

Interestingly, results of the survey before refurbishment showed that 40% were dissatisfied, followed by 30% satisfied. However, with 15% very satisfied, 10% very dissatisfied and eventually 5% showed no response. By contrast, a year after refurbishment amounted that 40% were satisfied, 35% very satisfied ranks second, with 15% dissatisfied. While, 5% visitors were both very dissatisfied and showed no response to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and its main comparisons are generally accurate: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while dissatisfaction was more common before refurbishment and satisfaction afterward. The overview identifies these broad shifts, and the survey figures are reported accurately. This meets the task well, with some features more fully presented than others. To show more of the precision expected at the next level, make the overview more concise and explicitly compare the combined positive and negative responses, or highlight that “no response” remained unchanged at 5%. Also avoid calling 74,000 the “lowest figure,” since the table only compares two periods; simply state that it was the lower total.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The four-paragraph structure is appropriate: an introduction, an overview, and separate detail paragraphs for the visitor totals and survey results. The progression from the overall change to specific percentages is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “By contrast” help signal comparisons. Cohesion is not always smooth, though. “While,” at the start of the final sentence leaves the clause feeling incomplete, and “On closer observation” adds little to the progression. Some transitions also make the survey details read like a list rather than a connected comparison. Use clearer links to group positive and negative responses, and ensure each sentence is grammatically complete so the organisation feels less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “accounted,” and “constituted,” and the reader can understand the main comparisons. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “tourists” is less suitable than “visitors” for museum attendance, “accounted highest amount” is not a natural collocation, and “amounted that” does not express the intended meaning. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “survery” and “ranks” where a past-tense form is needed. Aim for accurate, natural reporting language rather than inserting formal-sounding words where they do not fit. Reusing precise terms such as “visitor numbers” and “the proportion who were satisfied” would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “While” and sentences using “followed by.” Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy and sentence completeness. In “While, pie charts illustrate,” the comma after “While” is misplaced and the opening clause is not well formed. “Whereas” is incorrectly capitalised after a comma in the overview, and “While, 5% visitors…” is a fragment with a missing article. The phrase “a year after refurbishment amounted that 40% were satisfied” also has an incorrect sentence structure. Practise complete clauses, accurate punctuation around linking words, and consistent past-tense reporting; these changes would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
