IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table depicts changes in the number of vistors at Ashdown museum before and after its rennovation.
Whereas the pie charts illustrates the survey results regarding the satisfaction of visitors over the same period of time.
To begin with, before the rennovation 74,000 people visted the Ashdown museum. However, approximately 20,000 more people visted the museum after the rennovation in the same year.
On the other hand, before the refurbishment two-fifth of the vistors are dissatified with their visit which reduced to 15% after rennovation. A similar trend is followed in the proportion of very dissatisfied vistors.
A small proportion of individuals never respond to the survey which remianed the same even after the rennovation. Surprisingly after the rennovation, the share of vistors who are satisfied rises to 30% to 40%.
To sum up, after refurbishment of museum the satisfaction of vistors elevated along with increase in the number of vistors in the museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main elements of the task and give a clear overall summary: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, while satisfaction improved. The figures you report for visitors (74,000 and approximately 20,000 more) and for dissatisfaction (40% falling to 15%) are consistent with the charts. You also note that very dissatisfied responses declined and that no response remained unchanged. However, the account is not fully developed: the increase in satisfied visitors is described as rising “from 30% to 40%,” but the much larger rise in very satisfied visitors, from 15% to 35%, is omitted. The overview would be stronger if it highlighted this shift from predominantly negative to positive ratings and reported the exact total after refurbishment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to visitor numbers, survey findings and a concluding summary. Paragraphing helps separate the main information, and transitions such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand” and “To sum up” make the sequence easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical or does not express the relationship precisely: “On the other hand” introduces another survey detail rather than a clear contrast, while “Surprisingly” does not explain why the rise in satisfaction is unexpected. The opening also separates the table and charts into two fragments rather than forming a smooth introduction. Grouping the satisfaction figures into positive and negative responses, then comparing both years, would create clearer progression and reduce reliance on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “proportion,” “share,” “reduced” and “remained the same,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some useful variation in how you refer to visitors and satisfaction. However, several spelling errors—“vistors,” “rennovation,” “visted,” “dissatified” and “remianed”—are noticeable, and some word combinations are imprecise, such as “the satisfaction of visitors elevated” and “never respond to the survey.” “Pie charts” is also not the most accurate label for the displayed survey charts. Aim for consistently accurate spelling and more natural chart-reporting expressions, such as “visitor satisfaction increased” and “gave no response.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Whereas” and a relative clause in “the share of visitors who are satisfied.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening “Whereas the pie charts illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement and is an incomplete sentence when separated from the preceding sentence. Tense is inconsistent in “two-fifth of the visitors are dissatisfied,” where the report should describe the past survey, and “the share … rises” also shifts into the present. The phrase “rises to 30% to 40%” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the figures. Use complete sentences, maintain past tense for the survey results, and check agreement and comparative structures. These changes would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex sentences.
