IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table provides insights into the number of visitors to Ashdown museum during the year before and after refurbishment. The pie charts illustrate the percentage of visitors based on their satisfaction level with their visit, during the same two periods as a result of a survey.

Overall, the number of visitors increased after refurbishment by the figure of 16,000. Before refurbishment, visitors were quite dissatisfied with the visit, and only a small proportion of visitors were very satisfied. However, the year after refurbishment, there was a greater proportion of people satisfied and very satisfied. Furthermore, the visitors who gave no response in the survey maintained the same share during both the periods.

Before refurbishment, 74,000 people visited Ashdown musuem, while the number increased to 92,000 during the same year after refurbishment. Earlier, 40% visitors were dissatisfied with the visit, which was the highest proportion before refurbishment. Satisfied people accounted for 30% of the total visitors, while 15 % of the total visitors were very satisfied. Only 5% of the total visitors gave no response, while twice of them (10%) gave response as very dissatisfied.

After refurbishment, the percentage of people with no response and high dissatisfaction was same at 5%. The ratio of satisfied visitors increased after refurbishment by 10%, which was prominent in the survey. Moreover, very satisfiied people accounted for 35%. The ratio of dissatisfaction decreased to 15%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction increased overall, dissatisfaction fell, and the no-response share stayed at 5%. The overview clearly identifies these broad changes, and the body supports them with relevant figures, including the pre-refurbishment peak in dissatisfaction at 40% and the post-refurbishment 35% who were very satisfied. This gives the report a clear, well-supported account of both visuals. To make the comparisons more precise, clarify that the 10% figure for very dissatisfied visitors fell to 5% after refurbishment; the sentence saying “high dissatisfaction” was 5% could otherwise blur the distinction between dissatisfied and very dissatisfied. Also, “increased ... by 10%” would be clearer as a rise of 10 percentage points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two periods. This gives the reader a clear progression from the overall picture to supporting details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less precise or slightly mechanical, however: “Earlier” is a vague transition, and “After refurbishment” begins a paragraph that largely repeats information already summarised in the overview. The phrase “the same share during both the periods” also relies on a somewhat awkward reference. Grouping the satisfaction categories into clearer before-and-after comparisons, rather than listing each period in turn, would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “accounted for,” “proportion,” “increased,” and “decreased.” These choices communicate the main comparisons, and the tone is generally appropriate for an academic report. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, though: “the figure of 16,000” is less direct than “an increase of 16,000,” while “ratio” is not the best term for a percentage. There are also spelling slips in “musuem” and “satisfiied,” and “gave response as very dissatisfied” is an awkward collocation. Aim for consistent, accurate terms such as “share,” “percentage,” and “respondents,” and proofread spelling carefully to improve precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “40% visitors” needs an article or a possessive form (“40% of visitors”), and “twice of them” is not a correct comparative construction. In “the percentage of people with no response and high dissatisfaction was same,” the article is missing and the two categories are not clearly coordinated. The sentence “The ratio of satisfied visitors increased after refurbishment by 10%” also needs a clearer grammatical comparison. Practise accurate percentage constructions and articles, and check that each sentence clearly identifies the category being compared.
