IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table chart below provides data on the number of tourists after and before the renovation of Ashdown Museum. The pie charts illustrate the outcome about the reviews of people over the same two periods about their satisfaction level.
Overall, the total number of visitors to the Museum before the renovation were less than the tourists after refurbishment. The results of surveys of tourists reviews declare that majority of the visitors were not satisfied by their visit before the reconstruction; however, after the repairing the tourists tend to be moderately satisfied.
To specify, it is evident that the number of visitors before remodeling of museum were only 74,000 while the tourists after construction rose to 92,000. In the two years, about 5% of the people showed no response and only 15% of the visitors seemed to be very satisfied before construction. Almost half of the tourists were dissatisfied by their visit. Furthermore, after refurbishment 40% of the people were satisfied and 35% were very satisfied and happy by their visit. Only 15% of the people were dissatisfied. This depicts that a large proportion of visitors were satisfied by their visit after refurbishment and only a few showed dissappointement or no response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You cover the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and the survey shifted from a majority dissatisfied before refurbishment to a majority satisfied afterwards. The overview makes this contrast clear, and the body supports it with relevant percentages, including the unchanged 5% giving no response. This is a strong, well-focused summary. To make the account more fully precise, distinguish the two dissatisfaction categories: before refurbishment, 40% were dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied, rather than saying only that “almost half” were dissatisfied. Likewise, after refurbishment, 15% were dissatisfied and 5% very dissatisfied. The phrase “moderately satisfied” is also less exact than reporting the separate satisfied and very satisfied groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, and then details comparing visitor numbers and survey results. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To specify,” and “Furthermore” help signal the stages of the summary, and the reader can follow the before-and-after contrast. Some connections are less precise or slightly mechanical, however. “In the two years” is unclear because the figures refer to two separate years, while “This depicts” makes the final sentence feel like a repeated conclusion rather than a new comparison. Improve cohesion by grouping the satisfaction figures consistently by period and using clear references such as “In the year after refurbishment” instead of broad phrases like “the two years.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary and make attempts to vary wording, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “proportion,” and “depicts.” Meaning remains clear, but several substitutions are inaccurate or unnatural for describing this chart. “Tourists” is not the best term for museum visitors, and “reviews” suggests written comments rather than survey responses. Phrases such as “the outcome about the reviews” and “showed dissappointement” are also awkward; the latter contains a spelling error. Repeated alternatives for refurbishment, including “renovation,” “reconstruction,” “repairing,” and “construction,” do not all fit the context equally well. Prefer precise, consistent chart language and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast joined with “however” and a clause beginning “while.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the number of visitors … were less,” the singular subject requires “was lower”; similarly, “the number … were only 74,000” needs “was.” The phrase “after the repairing” has an incorrect article and noun construction, and “the results … declare” uses an unsuitable verb form in this sentence. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence patterns when describing figures. More consistently accurate structures would strengthen the response while preserving its useful range of sentence forms.
