IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the total of people who visited the Ashdown Museum before and after its refurbishment, while the two pie charts depicts the satisfaction levels of the visitors during the given period.

Overall, both the population figure as well as the satisfaction levels have significantly increased after refurbishment and proportion of unsatisfied visitors have declined.

In terms of dissatisfaction, 50% of the visitors expressed their dissatisfaction before renovation, with 10% expressing strong dissatisfaction and rest saying that they were general dissatisfied with the museum. However, the level dropped significantly after the refurbishment was complete. The proportion of people who were generally dissatisfied shrunk to 15% in comparison to the previous 40%.

Simultaneously, the percentage of very satisfied visitors rose to 35% after refurbishment from the previous 15%. The number of people who reported general satisfaction also show a modest increase of 10% from the year before refurbishment. Currently, 40% of museum visitors are satisfied whereas only 30% expressed their satisfaction before refurbishment was done.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast between the periods: visitor dissatisfaction fell, while satisfaction rose. Several figures are reported accurately, including very satisfied visitors increasing from 15% to 35% and satisfied visitors rising from 30% to 40%. However, the overview says that “satisfaction levels have significantly increased” without clearly distinguishing the categories, and it omits the total visitor figures of 74,000 and 92,000, an important feature of the table. The account of dissatisfaction is also incomplete: it gives the overall 50% before refurbishment and the 15% dissatisfied figure afterwards, but does not report the fall in very dissatisfied visitors from 10% to 5%. Covering both the visitor totals and the survey’s main changes would make the summary more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs discussing dissatisfaction and satisfaction. This makes the main comparisons easy to follow, and transitions such as “However” and “Simultaneously” help signal contrast and addition. Some connections are less precise, though. The overview’s reference to “population figure” is unclear in this context, and “the level” in the next paragraph could refer to dissatisfaction generally or to one category. The final paragraph also repeats the satisfaction comparison rather than bringing the key features together. Use more exact references to the chart categories and organise the details so that each paragraph develops a distinct comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “declined,” “dropped significantly,” “rose,” and “modest increase.” These choices help communicate the broad trends, and the response is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “population figure” does not naturally describe museum visitors, “the total of people” is awkward, and “general dissatisfied” is not the correct form for describing a category. “Expressed their dissatisfaction” is also repeated and less direct than the chart label. Aim for precise, consistent terms such as “number of visitors,” “dissatisfied,” and “very dissatisfied,” and distinguish clearly between the survey categories rather than using broad paraphrases that may blur their meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening contrast with “while” and the sentence beginning “with 10% expressing strong dissatisfaction.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In the introduction, the plural subject “two pie charts” takes “depict,” not “depicts.” The phrase “both the population figure as well as the satisfaction levels” has mismatched structure; use “both visitor numbers and satisfaction levels.” In “the number of people … also show,” the singular subject requires “shows.” There are also article and clause-form issues in “the rest saying” and “were general dissatisfied.” Checking subject–verb agreement and parallel phrasing would improve accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
