IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given table demonstrate the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. Along with that, the two pie charts represented the results of surveys that were conducted in order to check the satisfaction level of visitors during their visit at Ashdown Museum.
Overall, there were a rise in the number of visitors during the year after the refurbishment of museum as compared to the number of visitors during the year before refurbishment. The main reason of this growth was the satisfaction level of visitors which were demonstrated via pie charts.
In the first chart, very satisfied and satisfied visitors accounted 15% and 30% of overall share, respectively. However, an increase of 35% and 40% were seen in the visitors that were very satisfied and satisfied during the year after refurbishment, respectively.
In terms of dissatisfied and very dissatisfied visitors, there were a dramatic decline during year after refurbishment. This proportion is demonstrated via both graphs in which the dissatisfied and very dissatisfied visitors declined from 40% and 10% to 15% and 5%, respectively.
The visitors that gave no response remained same in their proportion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main information in both the table and charts, and the figures you report for satisfaction categories are accurate. You also identify the key overall changes: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, positive ratings increased, and dissatisfaction fell. However, the overview says the rise in visitor numbers was caused by improved satisfaction; the visuals show these changes together but do not establish a cause. The actual visitor totals, 74,000 and 92,000, are not stated, so the table is less fully reported than the survey results. For a stronger response, include both totals and describe the overall shift in satisfaction without claiming a reason that the data cannot prove.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing positive and negative satisfaction ratings. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In terms of” help signal the stages of the comparison. Some cohesion is less controlled, though. “The main reason of this growth” introduces an unsupported causal link, while “This proportion is demonstrated via both graphs” is an unclear reference to the two charts and their figures. The final sentence about no response is also rather detached. Grouping all before-and-after comparisons more explicitly and using precise references to the survey categories would make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbished,” “satisfaction level,” “proportion,” and “dramatic decline,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “accounted” and “demonstrated.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “accounted 15%” needs a suitable preposition, and “an increase of 35% and 40% were seen in the visitors” is an awkward way to describe the shares. “The main reason of this growth” also overstates what the data can show. Aim for precise collocations such as “accounted for,” “the proportion rose to,” and “the figures show,” while avoiding language that implies causation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “surveys that were conducted” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The given table demonstrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “there were a rise” should use a singular construction. In “visitors accounted 15%,” the grammatical pattern requires “accounted for 15%.” There are also awkward article and preposition patterns in “during year after refurbishment” and “visit at Ashdown Museum.” These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but more consistent agreement, articles, and sentence patterns would improve accuracy. Proofread each sentence for its subject and verb, then check prepositions.
