IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates the quantity of visitors per year who went to Ashdown Musuem before and after it was renovated. Whereas the pie charts illustrates the results of a satisfaction survey's conducted before and after the museum's refurbishment.

Overall, in comparision, the amount of visitors significantly increased after the museum's renovation. Moreover, after the renovation the satisfaction ratio of visitors recorded an exponential increase as well which was previously dominated by dissatisfied visitors.

Before refurbishment, the visitors count during the year was 74,000, with only 15% population being very satisfied and 30% were satisfied. However, 40% visitors recorded their visit's experience as dissatisfactory and 10% were very dissatisfied. While, 5% people didn't record any response to the survey.

After the museum's refurbishment, the visitors saw a significant increase raising the count to 92,000 visitors per year with around 35% being very satisfied which previously only 15% and 40% were now satisfied. Furthermore, the refurbishment lead to a drop in the dissatisfaction ratio bringing it to only 15%, which was previously recorded the most dominant with 40% and the ration of very dissatisfied visitors dropped to 5% from 10%. The ratio of people providing no response remained the same at 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover the main features and make accurate comparisons: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, positive satisfaction increased, and dissatisfaction fell. The overview identifies the broad shift from dissatisfaction before refurbishment to greater satisfaction afterwards, while the body includes the key percentages, including the unchanged 5% with no response. This gives the report a clear, well-supported account of the data. To make the summary more precise, distinguish the two positive categories consistently: after refurbishment, 35% were very satisfied and 40% were satisfied. The phrase “satisfaction ratio ... recorded an exponential increase” overstates what the chart shows; describe the change as a substantial rise instead. Overall, the main task is addressed clearly, with only some imprecision in describing the trend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, then details for the period before and after refurbishment. This organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. Some connections are less controlled, however. “Whereas” in the opening does not set up a complete contrast, and “While, 5%...” is an awkward fragment-like transition. The final paragraph also packs several comparisons into one long sentence, making the figures harder to process. Use shorter sentences and connect each comparison directly to its matching category. These refinements would make the otherwise logical progression smoother and less dependent on conspicuous linking words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the charts, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfaction,” “dominant,” and “remained the same.” These choices help communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely: “exponential increase” is too strong for the change shown, “satisfaction ratio” is less suitable than “proportion of visitors,” and “visitors count” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors in “Musuem,” “comparision,” and “ration,” alongside inconsistent forms such as “dissatisfactory.” Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; this would improve precision while retaining the range you already demonstrate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “Whereas,” “which,” and “bringing it to.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the pie charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “only 15% population” is missing an article or other determiner. “While, 5% people...” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, while “40% were now satisfied” lacks a clear noun reference. Punctuation around introductory clauses and sentence boundaries also needs attention. Build accuracy by checking agreement and articles, and by ensuring each sentence has a clear subject and verb. Shorter, complete sentences would help you express the comparisons more reliably.
