IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table illustrates the proportion of visitors to Ashdown Museum befor and after the year of refurbishment, and the bar charts demonstrates the level of their satisfaction during their visits before and after the establishment.
Overall, after renovation the ratio of visitors was huge as compared to the visitors that visited before refurbishment. Befor establishment, majority of the visitors were dissatisfied, and the majority of the people was satisfied after refurbishment. However, percentage of people that satisfied after redevolpment was prominent, followed by ratio of people who was very satisfied.
Initially before the redevolpment, 74000 people visited Museum in which majority of the people was dissatisfied about 40%, but the percentage declined to about 15% after development. Similarly, people who were very dissatisfied before establishment were about 10 percent and the proportion decended to 5% after rennovation.
However, the amount of people who were satisfied were 30 percent before renovation and the figure escalated to 40% after redevlopment. Likewise, proportion of people who were very satisfied was escalated from 15 percent to 35% after development. However, the qauntity of people who gave no response remained same before and after redevolpment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes in satisfaction accurately: dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%, while satisfaction rose from 30% to 40% and very high satisfaction from 15% to 35%; you also note that no response stayed at 5%. The overview captures the broad shift from mostly dissatisfied visitors to mostly satisfied ones. However, the table gives visitor totals, not proportions: 74,000 before and 92,000 after refurbishment. Calling this a “ratio” and describing it as “huge” is imprecise, and the increase in total attendance is not clearly reported as a comparison. Develop the overview by stating both the rise in attendance and the overall improvement in survey results, then distinguish totals from percentages consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs comparing the survey categories. Grouping the declining categories together and then the rising categories helps the reader follow the data. However, progression is weakened by repeated transitions such as “However” and “Similarly,” including where no contrast is being made. The overview also repeats points that are explained again in the detail paragraphs, while the visitor-total comparison is not integrated into the body. Use clearer topic sentences and reserve contrast markers for genuine contrasts; for example, organise the details around falling dissatisfaction, rising satisfaction, and the separate increase in attendance. This would make the relationships between the figures more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “declined,” “escalated” and “remained same,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “people,” “percentage” and “development,” and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “The ratio of visitors was huge” does not describe the attendance figures appropriately, while “the establishment” is not a suitable substitute for refurbishment. Spelling errors such as “befor,” “redevolpment” and “qauntity” also reduce control. Aim for precise chart language—“number of visitors,” “share of respondents,” and “refurbishment”—and use a smaller set of accurate verbs rather than forcing synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and “However,” and the main trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist in agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “the bar charts demonstrates” should be “the bar charts demonstrate,” and “the majority of the people was” should be “the majority of people were.” In “the percentage of people that satisfied,” the relative clause needs a verb form such as “who were satisfied.” There are also awkward constructions such as “the proportion … was escalated”; use “the proportion rose.” Check subject–verb agreement and build comparisons with consistent forms, such as “rose from 15% to 35%.”
