IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table and pie chart compares visitors number and satisfaction level at Ashdown museum before and after refurbishment.
Overall, both the total number of visitors and the proportion of positive satisfaction raising and non-response fell sharply
In terms of visitors number, the museum attracted 7400 people in the year before refurbishment, rising to 92000 in the year after, on increase of 18000 visitors
Regarding satisfaction level, there was a dramatic shift in visitors opinion. Before refurbishment, dissatisfaction dominated the result 40% of visitors reported being dissatisfied and further 10% were very satisfied, together accounting for 50% of response. only small minority expressed satisfaction, with just 30% and 15% very satisfied, while remaining 5% did not response.
After refurbishment, this pattern was reversed entirely, the combined proportion of satisfied and very satisfied rose to 75%(40% and 35% respectively). While those expressing dissatisfaction fell just 20 in total the rate of non response is at same 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast in satisfaction and include figures for both visitor totals and survey responses. However, several important details are inaccurate or unclear, which limits how fully the task is addressed. The total before refurbishment was 74,000, not 7,400, and the increase to 92,000 was 18,000, not 18,000 from the stated starting figure. In the overview, you say positive satisfaction and non-response fell, although positive satisfaction rose and non-response stayed at 5%. You also mislabel the pre-refurbishment figures: 40% were dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied, while 30% were satisfied and 15% very satisfied. Report the categories consistently and make the overview accurately summarise the key changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering visitor numbers and satisfaction. Phrases such as “In terms of” and “Regarding” help signal the shift between topics, and the comparison between the two survey periods gives the response a clear general direction. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, the overview contradicts the later details, and the final paragraph contains a run-on transition: “this pattern was reversed entirely, the combined proportion…”. The sequence of category figures is also difficult to follow. Use separate sentences for distinct comparisons and organise the satisfaction data in a consistent order across both years.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “dissatisfaction,” “dramatic shift,” and “combined proportion,” which allows you to describe the charts without relying only on basic terms. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “visitors number,” “satisfaction raising,” and “on increase” do not express the intended meanings clearly. “Pie chart” is also inaccurate because the task presents survey charts, not necessarily pie charts. There are spelling and word-form slips, including “museum” without its proper name capitalised and “response” where the verb “respond” is needed. Aim for accurate collocations and use the chart’s category labels consistently, such as “visitor numbers” and “levels of satisfaction.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Before refurbishment…” and the contrast introduced by “while.” The main message is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven, and several errors affect clarity. The opening needs subject–verb agreement (“The table and pie chart compare”), while “the proportion … raising” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “After refurbishment” joins two independent clauses with a comma, and “fell just 20 in total” lacks a clear grammatical construction. There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, for example “only small minority” and the lower-case “only” after a full stop. Practise accurate clause joining and check agreement, verb forms, and punctuation when editing.
