IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
the pie chart illustrates the total number of visitors to ashdown museum and the level of satisfaction they had after visiting. during the year before refurbishment total number of visitors were 74,000. during that year there were only few people who were very satisfied that is only 15% while only 10% of people were satisfied and there is a high percantage of people who were dissatified was upto 40% on the other hand 10% people were very dissastiesfied and 5% people did not givr any response. after refurbishment the chart changed the number of people who visited museum increased by twelve thousand number and the number of people who were satisfied increased upto 40% while 35% people were very satisfied however people who were dissatisifed were only about 15% and only 5% were dissatisfied which was a big fall and the people who did not give any response was same as the year before refurbishment. as a result it is very much evident that people were highly sattisifed after the refurbishment and the percenatge of people who were not sattisifed decreased after refurbishment of the museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction results, and your main comparison is clear: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction improved after refurbishment. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 40% dissatisfied before and 15% after, and the unchanged 5% with no response. However, one important figure is misreported: before refurbishment, 30% were satisfied, not 10%; the 10% figure refers to very dissatisfied visitors. The overview is present in your final sentence, but it would be stronger if stated separately and supported by a more systematic comparison of the positive and negative responses. This covers the task, though some details are less fully and clearly reported than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a broadly understandable before-and-after order, and phrases such as “on the other hand” and “as a result” show an attempt to connect comparisons and draw a conclusion. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Several links are also awkward or repetitive: “after refurbishment” and “the year before refurbishment” recur frequently, while “however” does not clearly mark the relationship between the figures that follow it. Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and two detail sections, and use references such as “the corresponding figure” to avoid repetition. This would create clearer progression and more controlled cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “increased,” “decreased,” “dissatisfied,” and “refurbishment,” so the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or repetitive, such as “the chart changed” and “a big fall.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “percantage,” “dissatified,” “sattiesfied,” and “givr,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the report. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the satisfaction categories as “positive responses” and “negative responses,” and use “rose by 18,000” rather than the less natural “increased by twelve thousand number.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine information in longer sentences, using clauses such as “while 35% people were very satisfied” and “which was a big fall.” However, the response relies heavily on long, loosely connected sentences, and errors in sentence structure and punctuation sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. Examples include “during the year before refurbishment total number of visitors were 74,000” and “the number of people who visited museum increased by twelve thousand number.” Articles and agreement also need attention: write “the total number … was” and “people who visited the museum.” Use full stops to separate comparisons, and practise a mix of accurate simple and complex sentences. These changes would make the report easier to follow.
