IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams presents the information about the total number of tourists that visited the Ashdown Museum before and after the year it was renovation, and shows the results of the survey of visitors satisfaction across five categories.
Overall, a large number of people came to see the Museum after it was refurbished. The number of individuals who were very satisfied surged more than twice in the latter year, whereas satisfied also wnet up moderately. While the category such as dissatisfied fell drastically. Which means it had overall a very positive impact.
The number of total visitors went up from 74 thousand to 92 thousand. The number of tourists that were very satisfied, surged from 15% to almost over a one-third. Whereas satsified category saw a modest increase of 10 percentage points, from 30% to 40%.
While few categories saw a increment, categories such as very dissatisfied felt drastically, from 40% to almost 15%. However, the no response cateogry remained identical in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both the visitor total and the satisfaction survey, and your overview identifies the main positive shift after refurbishment. The visitor figures are accurate, as are the increases in the very satisfied and satisfied groups and the unchanged no-response share. However, one important comparison is misreported: the 40% figure before refurbishment belongs to “dissatisfied,” not “very dissatisfied”; the latter fell from 10% to 5%. Also, “almost over a one-third” is imprecise for 35%, and the overview could more clearly summarise the overall movement from dissatisfaction towards satisfaction. This addresses the task and selects relevant features, but some details are unclear or inaccurate; more precise reporting and a fuller overview would strengthen it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering visitor numbers and survey results. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. However, progression within the survey details is sometimes disrupted by sentence fragments, such as “Whereas satisfied category saw…” and “While few categories saw a increment…”. The contrast marker “However” before the unchanged no-response figure does not express a clear contrast, and “Which means…” is an unclear, detached reference to the preceding point. Group the satisfaction categories more systematically and connect each comparison in complete sentences. These changes would make cohesion less mechanical and the relationships between figures easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “surged,” “modest increase,” “fell drastically,” and “remained identical,” which helps describe changes rather than merely list figures. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “tourists” is less suitable than “visitors” for museum attendees, and “the year it was renovation” does not express refurbishment correctly. There are also spelling errors such as “wnet,” “satsified,” and “cateogry,” alongside awkward phrases such as “almost over a one-third.” These do not prevent the main message from being understood, but they reduce precision. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling, especially in key data descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and “while,” and the visitor-total sentence communicates its figures clearly. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or incorrectly joined. “Whereas satisfied category saw…” and “While few categories saw…” are dependent clauses presented as sentences, while “Which means it had overall a very positive impact” is also a fragment. The opening has a subject–verb agreement error (“The diagrams presents”), and “before and after the year it was renovation” has an inaccurate grammatical construction. Use complete clauses, check agreement, and make sure contrast clauses are attached to a main clause. These recurring issues limit accuracy despite the meaning usually remaining clear.
