IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The Given Table and Diagram Illustrates the total number of visitors to ashdown museum. The comparison is done of visitors who visited the museum during the year before the refurbishment and during the year after refurbishment. There are also results of surveys of visitors satisfaction is shown. Overall, the number of visitors are increased after the refurbishment.
First of all, the total number of visitors was 74000 before the refurbishment. Laterly, during the year after refrubishment, the visitors strength has increased to 92000. Clearly, there are more visitors than before refurbishment.
Secondly, the surveys concluded that more people were dissatisfied of visit to museum before refurbishment. The year before refurbishment, 15 percent of people were very satisfied. While the 30 percent people were just satisfied and ok with visit to museum. Nearly 40 percent of people were dissatisfied and 10 percent of people were very dissatisfied. There were about 5 percent people who gave no response.
Lastly, in the year after refurbishment the very satisfied people strength increased to 35 percent. In addition, people who are satisfied also increased to 40. The strength of dissatisfied people decreased to 15 and very dissatisfied people also decreased to 5. However, the no response people percentage stayed the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and the figures you report are accurate: visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction increased and dissatisfaction fell. Your opening overview identifies the rise in attendance, but it would be stronger if it also summarised the main survey shift—for example, that positive ratings became the majority after refurbishment. The body gives useful detail for both periods, including the unchanged 5% with no response. This meets the task well, though some features are reported more fully than others and the overall comparison could be more clearly synthesised. To strengthen the response further, make the key contrast explicit in the overview and compare the two survey results directly rather than mainly listing each year separately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by visitor numbers and then survey results for each period. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the information, and the final paragraph makes the after-refurbishment figures easy to locate. However, these transitions are somewhat mechanical, and the survey discussion is divided by year rather than organised around direct comparisons. Some links between sentences are also awkward, as in “The year before refurbishment, 15 percent of people were very satisfied. While the 30 percent…” where “While” leaves an incomplete contrast. Use fewer formulaic markers and connect related changes more smoothly, grouping increases, decreases, and unchanged results.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “very satisfied,” and “percentage,” so the main information is generally understandable. However, the range and precision are limited by repeated or unnatural expressions. “Visitors strength” and “very satisfied people strength” are not natural ways to describe figures; “number of visitors” and “proportion of very satisfied respondents” would be clearer. Other awkward choices include “dissatisfied of visit” and “satisfied and ok with visit.” There are also spelling errors in “ashdown,” “Laterly,” and “refrubishment.” Aim for accurate collocations and a more formal register, and vary the language used to describe proportions and changes. These improvements would make the report more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and more developed structures, and most figures remain understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The Given Table and Diagram Illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The comparison is done of visitors” is an awkward passive construction. In “There are also results of surveys of visitors satisfaction is shown,” two structures are combined, making the sentence difficult to follow. The clause beginning “While the 30 percent people…” is also incomplete. Use straightforward, complete sentences when presenting data, check singular and plural agreement, and add articles where needed, as in “the museum” and “the year after the refurbishment.” Greater control of these patterns would improve accuracy.
