Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the numbers of visitors during the year before and after refurbishing the Ashdown Museum while the pie charts show the surveys results asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during both the years.

Overall, the number of visitors was increased after refurbishing the Museum. On the other hand, the very satisfied visitors increased dramatically during the year after refurbishing. The figure of dissatisfied and very dissatisfied visitors decline while people with no response stayed same in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main features and give a clear overview: visitor numbers rose, satisfaction improved, dissatisfaction fell, and non-response stayed unchanged. The figures you report for visitors (92,000) and the satisfaction categories (15% to 35%, 30% to 40%, 40% to 15%, and 5% unchanged) match the data. This meets the task well, with some features reported more fully than others: you omit the exact visitor total before refurbishment (74,000) and do not give the after-refurbishment figure for very dissatisfied visitors (5%), although you correctly note that it declined. To make the summary more complete and precise, include these comparisons and avoid describing the rise in satisfied visitors as “marginal” when it is a ten-percentage-point increase.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. The main comparisons are generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. “On the other hand” is used where a contrast is not needed, and “On the hand” is incomplete. The final paragraph begins with “Whereas,” creating a fragment rather than a fully connected sentence, while “from 40%.Furthermore” lacks a space after the full stop. Grouping the satisfaction figures more systematically—for example, positive responses together and negative responses together—would create smoother progression and reduce reliance on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “proportion,” “declined,” and “remained unchanged,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “increased considerably” and “increased dramatically.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “the surveys results” should be “the survey results,” and “the number very satisfied visitors” needs a clearer phrase such as “the proportion of very satisfied visitors.” “Marginally” understates the rise in satisfied responses, while “dramatically” is repeated and can sound overstated. The spelling error “secong” also affects accuracy. More precise, varied language for describing percentage-point changes would strengthen the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including “while” clauses and the relative clause in “The proportion of people with no response which was 5%.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the number of visitors was increased” uses an incorrect passive form; write “the number of visitors increased.” In “the figure of dissatisfied and very dissatisfied visitors decline,” the verb should be past tense (“declined”), and “people with no response stayed same” needs an article (“stayed the same”). The phrase “the number very satisfied visitors” is missing a grammatical link, and the final “Whereas” clause is not a complete sentence. Check tense consistency, articles, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
