IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table demonstrates the number of individuals going to Ashdown Museum , and the pie chart illustrates the information about survey data of satisfaction levels of persons, before and after it underwent renovation.

Overall, both the number of person and the proportion of positive satisfaction ratings surged considerably, following the refurbishment, while negative ratings ad non responses declined in considerable percentage.

In terms of visitor number, the museum attratcted 74,000 people in the year before its reinovation, rising to 92,000 in the year after, an increase of 18000 visitors.

Regarding satisfaction levels there was a dramatic shift in visitors opinion. Before the refurbishment, dissatisfaction dominated the results: 40% of visitors reported being dissatisfied and further 10% responsed dissatisfed, suming up to 50% of responses. However, sastisfaction accounted to 45% with 35 % of individuals reported satisfied and 15% were very satisfied, while the 10% didnt respond.

After the refurbishment this statictics was reversed completely, where satisfaction level rosed to total of 75%, with 40% of individuals being satisfied and 35% being very satisfied, while those expressing dissatisfaction depleted to only 20% in total (15% dissatisfied, 5% very dissatisfied). The rate of no response also declined to

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall changes: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, positive ratings increased, and negative ratings fell. The figures for visitors and most satisfaction categories are reported accurately, and the comparison between the two periods is relevant. However, some details are unclear or inconsistent: before refurbishment, 30% were satisfied and 15% very satisfied, but you reverse these figures in your account. You also describe the pre-refurbishment non-response rate as 10%, although it was 5%, and the final sentence is unfinished, leaving the after-refurbishment non-response figure unreported. These gaps make some parts less fully addressed. Check each category against the chart and complete the comparison of all key results.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for visitor numbers and satisfaction results. Phrases such as “Overall,” “In terms of,” and “Regarding” help signal the progression, and the before-and-after comparison is generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking information. However, the final sentence stops at “declined to,” which interrupts the progression and leaves the last point incomplete. Some connections are also awkward, such as “After the refurbishment this statistics was reversed completely,” and the satisfaction paragraph would be clearer if the categories were presented in a consistent order. Finish the final comparison and use more precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfaction,” “proportion,” and “dramatic shift,” so the main information is usually understandable. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “visitors” throughout. However, noticeable spelling errors—such as “attratcted,” “reinovation,” “sastisfaction,” and “statictics”—reduce accuracy. Some word choices and collocations are also unnatural: “number of individuals going to” is less suitable than “number of visitors to,” and “satisfaction accounted to” is not idiomatic. “Responses” is also used where “ratings” would be clearer. Proofread spelling and prioritise accurate, natural chart-description phrases over elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview with “while” and a comparison using “rising to 92,000.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “both the number of person and the proportion” has a number-agreement problem, while “those expressing dissatisfaction depleted” uses an unsuitable verb construction. The sentence beginning “Before the refurbishment” also has a confusing structure around “further 10% responsed,” making the category and total difficult to interpret. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and the final sentence is incomplete. Aim for controlled comparisons such as “the proportion who were satisfied rose to…” and check agreement, articles, and complete sentence endings.
