Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table below illustrates the data of the visitors to the ashdown museum during the year before and after when it was refurbished. The chart demonstrate the output of surveys describing how visitors are satisfied with their visits during the two periods.

overall, the number of visitors increased after refurbishment from 74000 to 92000. After refurbishment a big improvment seems to occur in the museums. In contrast, the number of very satisfied visitors has increased from 15% to 35% after refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall changes accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction improved, and dissatisfaction fell. The figures for the satisfaction categories are also reported correctly, including the unchanged 5% with no response. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the key information. However, some points are repeated—for example, the rise in the satisfied categories is stated in both the overview and the next paragraph—while the comparison between the two periods could be presented more clearly and systematically. The claim that “a big improvement seems to occur in the museums” is vague and does not specify the evidence. A more precise overview, followed by a concise comparison of positive and negative responses, would develop the information more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details about satisfaction and dissatisfaction. This helps the reader identify the broad topic. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview repeats figures that appear again in the following paragraph, and “On the other hand” introduces a contrast without making the relationship between the data especially precise. The final sentence repeats the general claim of improvement rather than adding a new comparison. Some sentence links are also awkward, such as “While the no response visitor remains same,” which is left as a fragment. Grouping positive responses together and then negative responses, with clear comparisons between years, would make the organisation more coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbished,” “visitors,” “satisfied,” and “dissatisfied,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts to describe change with phrases such as “increased” and “decreased.” However, the range is limited and some wording is imprecise or repetitive. “The output of surveys” is not a natural way to describe survey findings, while “a big improvement seems to occur in the museums” is vague and awkward. Spelling errors such as “improvment” and “ashdown” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise terms for the survey categories and vary the language used to report rises and falls; this would make the description more fluent and appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some complex structures, including “After refurbishment…” and the contrast introduced by “While,” but most sentences follow simple patterns, and errors occur in sentence construction and verb forms. For example, “The chart demonstrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “While the no response visitor remains same” is an incomplete clause. In “the number of very dissatisfied has also decrease,” the verb form is incorrect; “their is” also shows an error in the construction of the sentence. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly at the starts of sentences. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main comparisons, but more accurate clause formation and a wider range of controlled sentence patterns are needed.
