IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table along with the pie chart display the comparison of the visitors of Ashdown Museum of the before and after year of refurbishment as well as the survey results they collect in this two year.
The drastical change in the number of visitors has already proved the positive impact of the refurbishment. In the pre-refurbishment year, there were only 74000 visitors visited the museum. The satisfaction survey result of these visitors represents that only 15% were actually satisfied with their visit on that time. But on the contrary, the percentage of "Dissatisfied" and "Very Dissatisfied" is much more higher than the satisfied percentage. On the other hand, the percentage of "Very Satisfied" and "Satisfied" have dramatically increased in the year after refurbishment. 35% visitors were highly satisfied and 40% were satisfied with their visit. The percentage of overall dissatisfaction level has also decreased into total 20%.
So it is a clear reflection that refurbishment had a super positive response on the satisfaction level of the visitors. Though it is also mentionable that there is only one common point in two chart- that is "No response" which remains the same 5% in both of the chart.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall changes: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction improved, and the no-response figure stayed at 5%. The response also reports several key survey figures accurately, including 35% very satisfied and 40% satisfied after refurbishment. However, the overview is somewhat evaluative (“a super positive response”) rather than a concise summary of the data, and the pre-refurbishment satisfaction figures are misinterpreted: 15% were very satisfied, while 30% were satisfied, not “only 15%” satisfied overall. The combined dissatisfaction after refurbishment is correctly given as 20%, but the earlier combined figure is not stated. A clearer overview and more balanced comparison of both periods would make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to comparisons and then a concluding comment. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Though” help signal contrast, and the reader can generally follow the comparison. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the first body paragraph shifts between visitor totals, satisfaction figures and dissatisfaction without a systematic comparison of the two years. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated contrast markers and the final sentence beginning “Though.” Organise the details by category—for example, visitor numbers first, then satisfaction levels across both years—and use references such as “the corresponding figure” clearly to improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “satisfaction,” “percentage,” and “dissatisfaction,” and the categories are generally recognisable. There are also attempts at more emphatic language, such as “drastical change” and “dramatically increased,” but some choices are inaccurate or too informal for an academic data report. “Drastical” is not the appropriate form, “super positive” is conversational, and “the visitors of Ashdown Museum of the before and after year” is an awkward collocation. Repetition of “percentage” and “satisfied” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise, neutral reporting language, such as “visitor numbers rose,” “the proportion of satisfied visitors,” and “overall dissatisfaction declined.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses and relative clauses, and the main message is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “the visitors of Ashdown Museum of the before and after year” has an unclear noun structure, while “there were only 74000 visitors visited the museum” incorrectly combines “there were” with a second finite verb. In “the percentage … have dramatically increased,” the singular subject requires “has,” and “it is also mentionable” has an incorrect verb form. Articles, prepositions and sentence punctuation also need more consistent control. Practise building accurate comparison sentences, such as “The number of visitors rose from 74,000 to 92,000 after the refurbishment.”
