IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table gives the information about total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum. The pie chart illustrates the survey results of visitor satisfaction before and after the refurbishment.
Overall, the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum has substantially increased from 74,000 to 92,000 after the refurbishment.
Before the refurbishment, most people showed dissatisfaction about the museum. A total of 70% of people were not satisfied. When we consider the survey results after the refurbishment, it shows a significant decrease in dissatisfaction percentage about 70% to 55%.
People showed more satisfaction after the refurbishment of museum. Overall, 35% of people were very satisfied, 5% were satisfied. People were less satisfied before the refurbishment with just 15% very satisfied and 10% satisfied which is comparatively very less after the refurbishment. Only 5% of people were never interested to give the feedback on the museum.
In conclusion, people were more satisfied after the refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall trends accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and dissatisfaction fell after the refurbishment. You also report the before-refurbishment figures for very satisfied and satisfied visitors correctly. However, the after-refurbishment satisfaction figures are misreported: 35% were very satisfied and 40% were satisfied, not 5% satisfied. The stated fall in dissatisfaction from 70% to 55% is also inaccurate; the combined dissatisfied and very dissatisfied share fell from 50% to 20%. Your overview is relevant, but the account gives limited attention to the full distribution of responses and includes a conclusion that repeats the overview. More accurate comparisons and coverage of the key categories would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details, with a concluding sentence. This makes the main message easy to follow. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, and phrases such as “Before the refurbishment” and “When we consider” help signal comparisons. However, the progression is somewhat repetitive: the opening overview and final conclusion both state that visitors increased or became more satisfied, while the body does not organise all satisfaction categories into a clear comparison. Some references are also unclear, particularly “it shows a significant decrease,” where the chart or the survey results would be a more precise subject. Grouping positive and negative responses and comparing both periods directly would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “survey results,” “dissatisfaction,” and “substantially increased.” These terms communicate the topic and main trends. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural choices: “dissatisfaction about the museum” and “never interested to give the feedback” do not express the chart categories accurately, while “comparatively very less” is awkward. Repetition of “satisfied” and “refurbishment” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise chart language such as “dissatisfied,” “very dissatisfied,” “positive responses,” and “share,” and use natural collocations when describing changes. This would make the account more concise and accurate without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “When we consider the survey results after the refurbishment, it shows…” and a comparison beginning “People were less satisfied before…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following the general message. Some grammatical issues persist, however. In “The table gives the information about total number,” the article is missing before “total number”; “after the refurbishment of museum” also needs an article. The construction “from 74,000 to 92,000 after the refurbishment” would be clearer with a past-tense verb, since the figures describe completed periods. Review articles, tense consistency, and sentence patterns around comparisons to improve accuracy.
