IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The pie chart below shows the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after its refurbrishment. The charts also show the satisfaction levels of the visitors during the same two periods.

The comparison between both the chart shows the level of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of the visitors. We can see difference in the results of the surveys done before and after the renovation of the museum.

In the year before refurbishment the number of visitors who were very satisfied was 15. There was a huge number of people who were dissatisfied. The number of dissatisfied visitors was 40. Some who were satisfied were 30 in number. Visitors who were very dissatisfied were 10 in count. Only 5 of them did not have any response about the condition of the museum.

In the year after refurbishment we can see a visible decline in the number of people who were first dissatisfied. Now the number of satisfied visitors has increased by 10 and become 35. Also we can see that the people with no response are still the same in number. Still we can see 15 dissatisfied visitors. In this year the number of satisfied visitors and the visitors with no response is same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the two survey periods and report several figures, including the pre-refurbishment results and the unchanged 5% with no response. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task because it gives no clear overview of the main changes and omits the table’s visitor totals of 74,000 and 92,000. Some figures are also misreported: after refurbishment, 35% were very satisfied and 40% satisfied, but you say the satisfied group “has increased by 10 and become 35”; it actually rose from 30% to 40%. The final comparison also incorrectly says satisfied visitors and non-respondents were equal. Focus on the overall rise in visitors and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction, then support that overview with accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction is followed by separate descriptions of the two survey years. This gives the reader some sense of sequence, and phrases such as “In the year before” and “In the year after” help distinguish the periods. However, the ideas do not progress into a clear overall comparison, and the opening repeats the task rather than previewing the main trends. Several sentences list categories one by one, while “Also,” “Still,” and “Now” connect points mechanically rather than showing precise relationships. The final sentence is confusing because it compares satisfaction with no response. Group the positive and negative changes together and use clear comparisons to create a more coherent account.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “satisfied,” “dissatisfied,” “decline,” and “increased.” However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “The pie chart” misidentifies the visual, which includes a table and charts, while “huge number” is not a suitable description of a percentage. Phrases such as “in 10 in count” and “condition of the museum” sound unnatural in this context. There is also a spelling error in “refurbrishment.” Aim for accurate chart language and natural collocations, such as “the proportion of visitors,” “rose to,” and “fell to.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt some longer structures, for example, “In the year after refurbishment we can see…” However, the range is limited, and recurring errors affect clarity. In “The comparison between both the chart shows,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “both the chart” has an incorrect plural form. “The number of satisfied visitors has increased by 10 and become 35” has an unclear verb construction, while “the number of satisfied visitors and the visitors with no response is same” has agreement and article problems. Some sentence openings also rely on “we can see,” making the structure repetitive. Practise accurate comparisons using forms such as “the proportion rose from X to Y” and check agreement and articles.
