IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table compares the number of visitors of the Ashdown museum before and after the refurbishment, and who were satisfied and dissatified to the old and new appearance and attractions of the museum.

Overall, the total number of guests who visited prior changes was made was 74,000. There was a massive rise in the number of visitors after the rennovation.

In comparison, the year before refurbishment had recorded several people who are satisfied and dissatisfied with what the musseum has to offer. The percentage of guests who are satisfied prior was at 45% and on the other hand, there were 50% who expressed their dissatisfaction. Whereas, the rating of satisfaction the year after refurbishment massively rose to 75% and a minimal number of people who voted negatively was 20%, and the remaining has no response.

In conclusion, the rate of satisfaction the year before the rennovation was quite low than the rate after the changes was done. There were several people who appreciate the enhancement that took place in the museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall pattern: visitor numbers rose after refurbishment, and satisfaction improved. The figures you give for combined positive responses (45% before and 75% after) and negative responses (50% and 20%) are accurate. This covers the central comparison, but some important detail is under-reported: the total after refurbishment was 92,000, and the survey categories show distinct changes, such as “very satisfied” rising from 15% to 35% and “satisfied” from 30% to 40%. The overview also says the remaining respondents gave no response, but does not clearly report that this share stayed at 5% in both years. To make the account more complete, include the visitor total after refurbishment and compare the individual survey categories rather than relying mainly on grouped totals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the survey results. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In comparison,” and “Whereas” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is not always clear: the overview gives the 74,000 figure but leaves the 92,000 figure until only a general statement about a rise, and the final “In conclusion” repeats the satisfaction comparison rather than adding a distinct summary. “Whereas” also introduces a fragment-like contrast that is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence. Organise the body around the visitor totals and then the satisfaction categories, and use clearer references to the two years so readers can follow each comparison without rereading.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfaction,” “rating of satisfaction,” and “expressed.” These choices make the main message understandable, and some less common wording is attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for an academic report: “number of visitors of” is less natural than “number of visitors to,” “guests” is not the best term for museum visitors, and “massive rise” is imprecise. There are also spelling errors, including “dissatified,” “rennovation,” and “musseum.” Prefer precise, neutral reporting language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the figures as percentages of respondents and say satisfaction “increased substantially.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “Whereas,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. However, some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. “The total number of guests who visited prior changes was made was 74,000” has an unclear clause structure and incorrect verb pattern; a clearer form is “Before the refurbishment, the museum received 74,000 visitors.” In “the remaining has no response,” the verb does not agree with the plural idea and the tense is inconsistent; use “the remaining 5% gave no response.” The sentence beginning “Whereas” is not properly joined to a main clause. Build more controlled comparisons with accurate tense and complete clauses, while retaining some complex structures.
