IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The above table shows the data of surveys asking visitors of the Ashdown musuem about how satisfied they were during the year before of refurbish or after the refurbishment.
We can see that before the refurbishment of the musuem the number of satisfied visitors were 74,000 which dramatically increased after the refurbishment which stands out in 92000.
If we breakdown the result of the year before refurbishment it concludes that about 15% of visitors showed very satisfied whereas 30% showed only satisfied. Although the dissatisfied and very dissastisfied were about40% and 10%simultaneously. Also there were a group of people who gave no response.
Moreover, after the refurbishment the scenario changes quite a lot. People tend to be more satisfied after the refurbishment. The satisfied and very satisfied were higher than the year before of the refurbish. It stands on 35% and 40% consecutively. Though the dissatisfied rate drastically fell off to 15%. Very dissatisfied rate also reduced than before.
In conclusion we can say that the visitors satisfaction rate tends to get higher after the refurbishment of the musuem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall change: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and satisfaction improved after refurbishment. You also report several key survey figures accurately, including the pre-refurbishment shares who were very satisfied (15%), satisfied (30%), and dissatisfied (40%), and the post-refurbishment dissatisfied figure (15%). However, the post-refurbishment figures are reversed in your account: very satisfied was 35% and satisfied was 40%, not the other way around. The 5% no-response figure in both years is mentioned only vaguely, and the 10% very dissatisfied figure before refurbishment is not compared with the later 5%. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would make the main features more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, discussion of the two periods, and a concluding statement. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the before-and-after comparison, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” signal progression. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although the dissatisfied and very dissastisfied were about 40% and 10% simultaneously” is not a complete, well-connected sentence, and “It stands on 35% and 40% consecutively” does not clearly identify which satisfaction category each figure refers to. Use direct comparisons and clearer referencing, such as naming each category alongside its percentage, to make cohesion more reliable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing survey results, including “satisfied,” “dissatisfied,” “increased,” and “fell off,” so the topic remains understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the scenario changes quite a lot.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “the number of satisfied visitors were 74,000” confuses visitor totals with satisfaction percentages, while “stands out in 92000” and “satisfied and very satisfied were higher” are not natural ways to report data. Spelling errors such as “musuem” and “dissastisfied” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language, for example “the total number of visitors rose” and “the proportion who were satisfied increased.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional-style opening with “If we breakdown…” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the number … were 74,000” has subject–verb disagreement, and “during the year before of refurbish” has an incorrect prepositional pattern and verb form. The sentence beginning “Although the dissatisfied…” is a fragment, while “The satisfied and very satisfied were higher” lacks a clear grammatical subject. Work on agreement, complete sentence structure, and accurate forms such as “before refurbishment” and “the proportions of satisfied visitors were higher.”
