IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates a comparison between the turnover of visitors during a one year span before and after it was refurbished. Overall the visitors satisfaction rate and turnover seems to have increased after the refurbishment
It can be seen that the number of visitors have increased in the museum by 18,000 people after the refurbishment. The percentage of Very Satisfied has increased by 20 percent compared to an year before refurbishment.Similar positive trend has been seen for satisified visitors also, with an increase of 10 percent compared to an year before.
On the contrary, the dissatisfaction rate has dropped from a whopping 40% to 15% which supports the statement of the improvement in the satisfaction level of the visitors. We can also see the rate of very dissatisfied visitors have also decreased by 5% compared to year before and the visitors with no response had seen the same percentage before and after
In conclusion we can observe that the decision of the authorities of Ashdown Museum has been a timely approach to contribute to positive turnover of the visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main features accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction increased, dissatisfaction fell, and the no-response figure stayed at 5%. The overview identifies the broad positive change, and the comparisons of 40% to 15% dissatisfied and the 20-point rise in very satisfied visitors are relevant. This gives the report a clear factual basis. However, some points are less fully developed: the increase in satisfied visitors from 30% to 40% is mentioned without the actual figures, and the conclusion attributes the change to the authorities’ decision and calls it a “positive turnover,” which goes beyond what the charts establish. A more neutral overview and precise reporting of all key percentages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an overview to visitor numbers and satisfaction comparisons, then to a concluding statement. Phrases such as “On the contrary” help signal a contrast, and the main points are generally easy to follow. Some cohesion is less controlled, however: the opening overview runs directly into the next sentence without clear punctuation, and the final conclusion repeats the idea of improvement rather than adding a useful summary. Connections such as “Similar positive trend” are understandable but could link more precisely to the preceding figures. Grouping the visitor total and the satisfaction results into clearly separated paragraphs, with a concise overview first, would make the progression more deliberate and the comparisons easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “increased,” “dropped,” “dissatisfaction rate,” and “compared to.” These choices communicate the main trends, and terms such as “Very Satisfied” reflect the chart categories. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise for an academic report: “turnover of visitors” is not the natural term for visitor numbers, “whopping” is too informal, and “positive turnover” does not clearly describe the data. There are also spelling errors in “satisified” and inconsistent capitalisation of “Very Satisfied.” Aim for neutral, precise language and use the chart’s categories consistently; this would make the vocabulary more accurate and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “On the contrary” and the clause beginning “which supports the statement.” The meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the number of visitors have increased” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the visitors satisfaction rate and turnover seems” also mismatches a compound subject with its verb. Article use is awkward in “an year before,” and several sentences need clearer punctuation, particularly the opening lines and the run-on ending of the second paragraph. Check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries during revision. More consistently accurate control of these forms would improve clarity while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
