IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table presents the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and after its refurbishment, while the two pie charts illustrate the result of surveys conducted to know the visitors' satisfaction.
Overall, the number of visitors increased after refurbishment. The results of surveys indicated that after refurbishment, many people were completely satisfied with their visit, and the number of people dissatisfied was decreased.
Before refurbishment, Ashdown Museum welcomed only 74,000 visitors. Nearly 40% of people were dissatisfied with their visit, while 30% of them were satisfied. 15% of visitors indicated the services of their visit as very satisfied. Only 10% were very disappointed and dissatisfied, while 5% of people didn't give a response in the survey.
After refurbishment, the number of visitors increased by 18,000 people, reaching 92,000 visitors in total. The results of surveys, compared to before refurbishment, also changed abruptly. 35% of people were very satisfied, and 40% were just satisfied. 15% voted as dissatisfied, while 5% of visitors were very dissatisfied and 5% gave no response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and your overview identifies the two main changes: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction improved and dissatisfaction fell. The figures you report are accurate, including the unchanged 5% giving no response. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the data. To strengthen it further, make the overview more precise by explicitly contrasting the combined satisfied categories with the dissatisfied categories, rather than saying “many people were completely satisfied,” which refers only to the “very satisfied” group and is somewhat general. Also, “the services of their visit” is unclear about what respondents rated; describe their satisfaction with the visit itself.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two periods. This creates a clear progression from the broad trends to the supporting figures. Comparisons are also signposted with phrases such as “after refurbishment” and “compared to before refurbishment,” so the reader can follow the changes. To make the cohesion more flexible and the comparison more integrated, connect related figures across periods directly—for example, state together that dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%, while satisfaction rose from 30% to 40%. The repeated sentence openings “Before refurbishment” and “After refurbishment” are clear, but varying these transitions would make the report flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “increased,” and “reaching,” and the meaning is consistently clear. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural choices that limit flexibility and collocational control. “Completely satisfied” does not accurately represent the chart’s separate “very satisfied” category, while “the services of their visit” and “voted as dissatisfied” are awkward formulations. “Changed abruptly” is also not the most suitable description of changes shown across two survey periods. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “reported being very satisfied,” “respondents were dissatisfied,” and “changed considerably.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, including “The table presents …, while the two pie charts illustrate …” and “After refurbishment, the number of visitors increased by 18,000 people, reaching 92,000 visitors in total.” The overall meaning remains clear. Some grammatical awkwardness remains, particularly in “15% of visitors indicated the services of their visit as very satisfied,” where the sentence structure does not clearly express who was satisfied with what. “Only 10% were very disappointed and dissatisfied” also combines descriptions in a way that makes the category relationship unclear. Use a consistent pattern such as “15% of respondents said they were very satisfied” and check that each sentence clearly links the respondent to the rating.
