IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table reflects the comparison of the number of Ashdown museum's visitors on the years before and after refurbishment. The pie charts also depict the visitors' satisfaction ratings from the surveys conducted during these periods.
It is apparent that the museum refurbishment yields favorable results as the number of visitors increases from 74,000 to 92,000. The addition of 12,000 can be attributed to this museum development.
This good outcome can also be noticed with the results of surveys of the visitor satisfaction pre and post refurbishment. For pre-refurbishment's results, almost half are satisfied, 15% are very satified, while 30% are satisfied. The other half answered unfavourable, which 40% are dissatisfied and 10% are very dissatisfied. The remaining 5% did not respond.
While for post refurbishment, the surveys show a significant increase of satisfaction rating. Majority of the visitors are satisfied, which 35% are very satisfied and 40% satisfied. The results also improved in terms of dissatifaction, the results show 15% are dissatisfied and 5% are dissatisfied. The rest 5% did not answer the survey.
In conclusion, the Ashdown museum's refurbishment has resulted a positive results based on the number of visitors and satisfaction ratings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and your overview correctly identifies the overall positive change: attendance rose from 74,000 to 92,000, while satisfaction increased after refurbishment. Most survey figures are reported accurately, including the unchanged 5% with no response. However, there are two important inaccuracies: the increase in visitors is 18,000, not 12,000, and after refurbishment the 5% figure is “very dissatisfied,” not dissatisfied. The phrase “almost half are satisfied” before refurbishment is also unclear because the satisfied categories total 45%. These errors and the somewhat broad claim that refurbishment caused the changes limit the precision of an otherwise relevant and well-covered summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a general overview, separate descriptions of the two survey periods, and a conclusion. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrasts such as “For pre-refurbishment” and “While for post refurbishment” help signal the comparison. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly the repeated “results” and the opening “This good outcome can also be noticed.” The transition into the post-refurbishment figures is also not smoothly integrated, and the conclusion largely repeats the overview. To strengthen progression, group the satisfaction categories into positive and negative responses and use clearer, less repetitive links between the two periods.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “satisfaction ratings,” “dissatisfied,” and “significant increase,” so the main comparisons are understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “It is apparent” and “In conclusion.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “The addition of 12,000” is not an appropriate way to describe the increase, “answered unfavourable” is awkward, and “yields favorable results” overstates a causal relationship. Spelling errors such as “satified” and “dissatifaction” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language, for example “attendance rose by 18,000” and “negative ratings fell.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and more complex clauses, including “which 35% are very satisfied and 40% satisfied.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven, with errors in sentence construction, articles, verb forms, and punctuation. For example, “the number of Ashdown museum's visitors on the years” has faulty article and preposition choices, while “the refurbishment has resulted a positive results” lacks the required preposition and has a number-agreement problem. The sentence beginning “The other half answered unfavourable, which 40%...” is also structurally incomplete. There are several run-on or poorly joined clauses, and missing spaces after full stops. Practise accurate comparative sentence patterns and check each clause for a complete grammatical structure.
