IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
We can learn from these two pie charts about the total number of visitors at Ashdown Museum from the year of refurbishment to before and after. It shows the results of surveys of visitor satisfaction from Very satiesfied to being highest and to No response to being the lowest satisfaction. Before the refurbishment 40 out of 100 people were Dissatisfied during their visit at the Ashdown Museum, then after the refurbishment 35 out of 100 now were Very satiesfied of the museum. People have more visitors of a number of 92,000 per year, but before they were only a number of 74,000 per visit a year at the museum. It had more increase of visitors after the refurbishment during their visits. Before the refurbishment, it was 10 out of 100 people were Very dissatisfied and on the next year only 5 out of 100 were dissastisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main overall changes: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and dissatisfaction fell while very high satisfaction increased. However, the account is partial and some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. For example, you say “10 out of 100” were very dissatisfied before and “only 5 out of 100” were “dissastisfied” afterwards; the latter figure refers to very dissatisfied, while dissatisfied after refurbishment was 15%. You also omit the after-refurbishment satisfied figure and the unchanged 5% no-response result. There is no clear overview bringing together the key trends, and the response is four words below the required minimum. Include a concise overview and report the main satisfaction categories accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response includes relevant information, but its progression is difficult to follow because the figures and comparisons are presented in one paragraph without a clear structure. The opening moves from the charts to a confusing claim that “Very satiesfied” is the highest and “No response” the lowest satisfaction, then shifts between satisfaction results and visitor totals. Linking phrases such as “then after” and “but before” provide some connection, but they do not consistently clarify which year or category is being compared. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph comparing the figures. Use clear references such as “before refurbishment” and “after refurbishment” consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “visitor satisfaction,” “Dissatisfied,” and “increase,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning awkward: “People have more visitors of a number” and “74,000 per visit a year” do not express the totals naturally. Repeated use of “number” and “people” also limits precision. There are spelling errors in “satiesfied” and “dissastisfied,” and “Very satisfied” should be used as the chart category rather than an improvised phrase. Practise standard reporting expressions such as “the number of visitors rose” and “accounted for” when describing percentages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine information in longer sentences, but the range of structures is limited and errors are frequent enough to make some comparisons difficult to understand. For example, “Before the refurbishment 40 out of 100 people were Dissatisfied … then after the refurbishment 35 out of 100 now were Very satiesfied” joins two comparisons without a clear grammatical structure. “It was 10 out of 100 people were Very dissatisfied” also contains an incorrect clause pattern. Some sentences rely on simple forms, and tense and sentence construction are not consistently controlled. Practise writing one comparison per sentence, using patterns such as “The proportion who were dissatisfied fell from 40% to 15%” and “Visitor numbers increased from 74,000 to 92,000.”
