Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table illustrates the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum, whereas the pie charts demonstrate the results of surveys of visitor satisfaction.

Overall, the table had the two parts during the year before and after refurbishment. There is a significant differences. However, in the first pie chart shows that the highest proportion of people had them who were dissatisfied, while the huge proportion of people were very dissatisfied in the second pie chart.

According to the first table, the total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum had two parts.

Individuals, who visited the museum during the year before refurbishment accounted for 74,000, whereas people who visited the museum after refurbishment increased significantly from 74,000 to 92,000.

40%. People before the refurbishemnt who were very satisfied had two times less percentage than individuals who were very dissastisfied. Society who were very satisfied after the refurbishment accounted for 35% which had the highest proportion of the second chart. Before and after refurbishments them who had no response had the smallest proportion (5%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You include the main subjects and several accurate comparisons: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, dissatisfaction fell from 40% to 15%, and satisfaction increased from 30% to 40%. However, the overview misreports a key feature: after refurbishment, the largest group was satisfied (40%), not very dissatisfied; very dissatisfied was only 5%. The overview also says the first chart’s highest proportion was dissatisfied, but does not clearly summarise the overall shift from negative to positive responses. Some details are unclear, such as “two parts” and “two times less percentage.” To strengthen the response, give a concise, accurate overview of the visitor increase and the marked improvement in satisfaction, then report the main figures precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has separate paragraphs for an introduction, overview, visitor totals and survey results, so the reader can identify the broad topics. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the visitor total is introduced in the overview and then restated with “the total number of visitors … had two parts.” Several linking words, including “However” and “Compared with,” do not clearly express the relationship between the ideas that follow. The overview also conflicts with the later figures, making the organisation harder to follow. Use a clearer sequence—introduction, accurate overview, then selected comparisons—and connect each comparison directly to its figures. Avoid repeating information simply to fill out a paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary such as “refurbishment,” “proportion,” “accounted for,” and “dissatisfied,” which helps communicate the chart topic. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “the table had the two parts” and “people had them who were dissatisfied” do not express the intended ideas clearly; “two times less percentage” is also an awkward comparison. There are noticeable spelling errors in “refurbishemnt” and “dissastisfied.” Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “the figures show,” “the share fell,” and “the largest category.” Proofreading spelling and avoiding repeated generic terms like “people” would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use comparison structures, for example, “whereas … increased significantly from 74,000 to 92,000.” However, the range of sentence forms is limited, and attempts at complex sentences often contain errors that make the relationships unclear. Examples include “There is a significant differences” (subject–verb agreement), “in the first pie chart shows” (an incomplete clause), and “the percentage of people who was satisfied” (agreement). The sentence beginning “People before the refurbishment who were very satisfied…” is also difficult to follow because its comparison is not grammatically controlled. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with “while,” “whereas,” or “compared with,” checking agreement and clause structure.
