IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table represents the numbers of tourists before and after a year the Ashdown Museum was refurbished. The charts illustrate the survey results asked to visitors if there were satisfied or not, during the same two periods.

Overall, the data table presented a certain amount of growth in tourism after the museum refurbished. In the charts, before results shows that most people are dissapointed after the visits; meanwhile, the after results are quite opposite after refurbishment.

Firstly, there were total 74000 people who visited the Ashdown Museum during the year before refurbishment. The numbers in total visitors has rapidly changed to 92000 after the renewal of that museum.

Secondly, from the data of surveys, the total number of people who were dissatisfied was 40% before the restoration and it then dropped to only 15% after the renewal. Additional, number of very dissatisfied people was 10% which fells to 5%, before and after respectively. People who gave no response to the survey remained constant at 5%. The major change was recorded into the visitors who are very satisfied, increased from 15% to 35%. The same thing happens with satisfied tourists, it grew from 30% to 40% after the refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover both the visitor totals and the satisfaction surveys, and the figures you report are accurate. The overview identifies the key contrast: attendance rose after refurbishment, while dissatisfaction gave way to greater satisfaction. You also support this with relevant comparisons, including dissatisfied visitors falling from 40% to 15% and very satisfied visitors rising from 15% to 35%. This gives the response a clear, well-supported account of the main features. To make the summary more fully developed, state the overall satisfaction pattern explicitly—for example, that the combined satisfied categories rose from 45% to 75%—and avoid the broad phrase “most people are disappointed,” since 40% is the largest single category but not a majority. These refinements would make the overview more precise and comprehensive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with a sensible progression from visitor numbers to survey results. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” help signal the shift between data sets, while “meanwhile” introduces the contrast between the two survey periods. The comparisons are generally easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical, and “the after results” is an unclear reference that makes the overview less smooth. The final paragraph also lists several categories in succession without grouping the positive and negative responses, so the main pattern could be easier to see. Use clearer references such as “the post-refurbishment survey” and organise details around the overall contrast.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “refurbished,” “dissatisfied,” “very satisfied,” “dropped,” and “remained constant.” These choices allow you to describe the main changes and comparisons clearly. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “restoration” and “renewal,” but using several near-synonyms for refurbishment sounds imprecise in this context. Some word choices and collocations are awkward: “growth in tourism” is less exact than growth in visitor numbers, and “the major change was recorded into” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “dissapointed” and “Additional” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, consistent terms and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “meanwhile” and a relative clause in “people who gave no response.” The meaning is generally recoverable, and several sentences communicate the data clearly. However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “before results shows” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The numbers in total visitors has rapidly changed” has agreement and sentence-construction issues. In “there were total 74000 people,” the article and placement of “total” are inaccurate, and “it then dropped to only 15%” uses an unclear pronoun reference. Work on agreement, articles, and clear sentence subjects, and vary sentence patterns while checking each clause for accuracy.
