IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The set of table chart depicts proportion of visitors to Ashdown museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished while the given pie charts illustrates the survey of visitors satisfaction.

Overall, it is readily apparent that the number of visitors after refurbishment of museum increased and number of visitors dissatisfaction dropped significantly.

To begin with, the number of visiting during the year before refurbishment was 74000 which increased to 92000 during the year after refurbishment. While the result of survey showed positive trend, year before refurbishment, the percentage in very satisfied and satisfied were 15% and 30% which increased to 35% and 40% year after refurbishment.

On the other hand, the percentage of dissatisfied noticed at 40% before refurbishment, which drastically decreased to 15%. The least numbers of very dissatisfied and no response were also showed detrimental trends, which noticed at same proportion with only 5% after refurbishment. Whereas, the number were 10% and 5% before refurbishment

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall changes accurately: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, satisfaction increased, and dissatisfaction fell. You also report the key survey figures, including satisfied visitors rising from 30% to 40% and dissatisfied visitors dropping from 40% to 15%. However, the overview could be more complete by noting that “very satisfied” also rose substantially, while “no response” remained unchanged at 5%. The final comparison is difficult to follow: “the least numbers of very dissatisfied and no response” groups categories with different trends, and the figures are not clearly assigned to each period. The response is 145 words, below the required 150-word minimum; develop the comparisons slightly further to meet the requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the visitor totals and survey results. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information. Linking phrases such as “To begin with” and “On the other hand” help signal shifts, although the latter does not clearly introduce a contrast because the paragraph continues reporting survey results. The final sentence beginning “Whereas” is incomplete in its relationship to the preceding sentence, and the reader has to infer which figures belong to which categories and year. Group the positive responses together, then compare the negative responses and unchanged non-response figure, using clear references to each period.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “percentage,” “increased,” and “decreased,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “readily apparent” and “drastically.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “set of table chart” does not describe the visuals clearly, “number of visiting” is not an appropriate phrase, and “detrimental trends” mischaracterises the fall in very dissatisfied responses as a negative development. “Noticed at” is also an awkward way to report a figure. Aim for precise chart language such as “the table shows,” “the proportion stood at,” and “the share of very dissatisfied visitors fell.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “While the result of survey showed positive trend.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in phrases such as “number of visitors” and “after refurbishment of museum”; subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “the given pie charts illustrates” and “the percentage … were.” The final “Whereas” clause is not a complete sentence, and the sentence beginning “The least numbers” has an unclear grammatical structure. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Check articles and singular/plural agreement, and make sure every subordinate clause is attached to a complete main clause.
