IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
74,000 visitors visited Ashdown Museum before refurbishment and 92,000 visitors visited it after refurbishment which shows clear growth in the number of visitors after refurbishment. According to the result of the survey, out of 100, 40 people were dissatisfied with the museum before the refurbishment. 15 people were very satisfied, 30 people were satisfied and 10 were very dissatisfied. Moreover, 5 people didn't give any response.
On the other hand, after the refurbishment, again out of 100 people, 40 were satisfied, 35 people were very satisfied. However, some people were still dissatisfied. according to the survey, 15 out of 100 were dissatisfied, 5 people were very dissatisfied and the remaining five didn't give any response.
Comparison the survey of year before refurbishment and year after refurbishment gives clear idea that majority of people were dissatisfied before the refurbishment and majority were satisfied after the refurbishment. However, there is still room for improvement as some people are still not satisfied after the refurbishment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You report the key figures accurately, including the rise in visitors from 74,000 to 92,000 and the changes in satisfaction ratings. Your overview—that dissatisfaction was more common before refurbishment, while satisfaction predominated afterwards—is relevant and supported by the figures. This covers the main features, though some comparisons could be developed more precisely: for example, very satisfied responses rose from 15% to 35%, while dissatisfied responses fell from 40% to 15%. The phrase “majority of people” is not strictly accurate for the pre-refurbishment results, since 40% were dissatisfied rather than more than half. A clearer overview distinguishing the largest category from an actual majority, alongside a few direct comparisons, would make the summary more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it first reports visitor numbers and the earlier survey, then describes the later survey, and ends with a comparison. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. However, the final paragraph repeats information already given rather than adding a concise synthesis, and “Comparison the survey…” is an awkward transition that interrupts the flow. Some links, including “However,” do not clearly express contrast in their sentence. To strengthen progression, group the two survey periods around the main shifts in satisfaction and use fewer, more precise connectors. The paragraphing is clear, but the comparison could be integrated more smoothly with the data description.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “dissatisfied,” “very satisfied,” and “clear growth,” so the reader can understand the main information. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “room for improvement.” Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “74,000 visitors visited” is repetitive, and “gives clear idea” does not fit naturally in this context. “Majority” is also an imprecise choice for a category representing 40%. Aim for concise reporting verbs and accurate terms for proportions, while retaining the useful satisfaction vocabulary already present. These refinements would make the description more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, and most of the information remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “Comparison the survey” needs a determiner and a different sentence structure, while “gives clear idea” is missing an article. In “15 people were very satisfied, 30 people were satisfied and 10 were very dissatisfied,” the parallel structure is understandable but could be made more consistent. Capitalisation after a full stop is also inconsistent in “according to the survey.” Practise forming accurate comparison sentences and checking articles, sentence openings, and punctuation. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy without sacrificing clarity.
