IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table illustrates the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum and the pie charts compare the visitor satisfaction level year before and after refurbishment.

Overall, it is clear that highest number of visitors came to museum after remodelled, whereas before its redesign dissatified users made up the largest ratio, while very dissatisied visitors accounted for the lowest percentage. Moreover, after its restuctured very satisfied users made up the maximum proportion, although very dissatified received the minimum figure.

As the table shows, there were 74,000 people visit to the museum before its developments and that number increased to 92,000 after its modifications. However, the highest ratio of visitors which were dissatisfied that is 40 in first chart, while in second dissatisfaction were contribute only 15. Futhermore, 40 were satisfied after changings and its 30 before refurbishment.

On the other hand, very dissatisfied tourists value was 10 in year before and 5 in time after its redevelopment. Additionally, the figure for very satisfied was 15 and 35 before and after respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main elements of the task and give a clear overall comparison: visitor numbers rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and dissatisfaction was more common before refurbishment while satisfaction was higher afterwards. Most reported figures are accurate, including the changes in the satisfied and very satisfied groups. However, some features are less fully reported: the no-response share remained at 5% in both years, and the overview could state more directly that the combined satisfied categories rose from 45% to 75%, while the combined dissatisfied categories fell from 50% to 20%. Your description of the largest and smallest groups is relevant, but the overview is somewhat repetitive and does not bring these broader shifts together clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs reporting figures, and the information generally follows the before-and-after sequence. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “As the table shows,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships. However, progression is not always smooth: the overview repeats the idea of the highest and lowest satisfaction groups, and the final paragraph returns to figures already mentioned without adding a clear comparison. Some references are also difficult to follow, as in “its 30 before refurbishment,” where the category is not restated. Grouping the satisfaction figures by positive and negative responses, then comparing both years within each group, would make the organisation more coherent and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “visitor satisfaction,” “dissatisfied,” “proportion,” and “refurbishment,” so the main subject is usually clear. There are also attempts to vary wording, such as “redesign,” “developments,” and “modifications.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning harder to follow: “highest ratio” is less suitable than “largest proportion,” and “very dissatisfied tourists value” does not express the intended percentage clearly. Spelling errors such as “dissatified,” “restuctured,” and “Futhermore” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate, consistent terms for the chart categories rather than replacing them with loosely related synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “whereas” and a sentence using “although.” The main comparisons can generally be understood, and the response includes several complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “there were 74,000 people visit” needs a noun phrase such as “74,000 people visited,” while “after remodelled” lacks a grammatical subject and passive form. In “dissatisfaction were contribute only 15,” the verb construction is incorrect, and “the figure for very satisfied was 15 and 35” has an agreement problem because two figures are being compared. More reliable control of verb forms, articles and sentence construction would make the comparisons clearer.
